Embracing everyday sustainability

Progressing a better future for all through everyday sustainability

April 15, 2024

As we welcome Earth Month this April, we're taking a moment to highlight those within our Deloitte community who embody our commitments and progress toward helping achieve a low-carbon future through everyday sustainability within our organization, for our clients, and in society.

Jared Mudachi is a strategy & analytics consultant with Deloitte Consulting LLP and co-lead of Deloitte’s New York Green Team, which is focused on helping embed sustainability into Deloitte’s culture and operations by driving sustainability-related behavioral, operational, and community-based change in the New York area.

Jared emphasizes the importance of aligning work with personal interests and passions. "This will naturally enable professionals to drive impact and help make a meaningful difference," he says. For Jared, this means dedicating time to purpose and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at Deloitte, including our sustainability efforts, especially during Earth Month.

Why is sustainability important to you personally?

The future of our planet and the generations of people to follow us depend on the decisions we make today. The issues we face in the sustainability space, such as climate change, water pollution, and deforestation, are of profound significance. These issues will require change across the world to help ensure we preserve this place we call home.

When did you start as the co-lead for the New York Green Team, and what kinds of responsibilities do you have?
I started as a co-lead for the New York Green Team in October of 2022. As one of the co-leads, I am responsible for spearheading events, building external relationships with local nonprofits and sustainability-focused organizations, finding ways to collaborate and synergize with internal groups across Deloitte, and much more.

Could you share several examples of the impact that the New York Green Team has had on your office and the surrounding community?
We host several drives throughout the year to not only promote sustainability but also help people in need. For example, last year we held a food drive, where we collected nonperishable foods in our New York office and donated them during the holiday season. During the previous year, we collaborated with the NY Women and Allies community at Deloitte to co-host a winter clothing drive, where we collected clothing for people in need. The donated clothes not only stayed out of landfills and freed up space in professionals’ closets but also helped those in need during the winter.

Furthermore, the NY Green Team and NY Black and Allies community co-hosted an event with key community sustainability leaders from the education and nonprofit sectors for an interactive discussion to help Deloitte professionals learn about inequities in air quality in different neighborhoods in the New York area, the role climate change can play in deepening existing societal inequities, and how to support local organizations aimed at educating on air quality access and improving air quality in the city.

What are some ways you can contribute to sustainability efforts in your local community? Jared shared several quick tips.

  • Start small: Consider using a reusable water bottle or take public transit instead of driving. Small steps make a world of difference in combating the negative effects of climate change and other environmental issues we face. All of these small steps add up to a holistic and comprehensive change by communities, states, countries, continents, and ultimately, our entire planet.
  • Educate yourself: Learn about environmental challenges your community faces and research ways to help. Even spending 5 to 10 minutes every day to learn about a sustainability-focused topic that interests you can make a significant difference! This can open so many opportunities for you, such as finding local sustainability-focused events, networking with green-minded individuals, and developing a new interest or passion within the sustainability space.
  • Advocate: Encourage your friends, family, and coworkers to adopt more sustainable practices. Spending time to encourage and educate others can amplify your sustainable impact! Every time you encourage another person to make sustainable change, they can potentially encourage or educate another person, and the sustainable change continues to spread.
  • Volunteer: Join a local environmental group or participate in community clean-up events. Joining local environmental groups or events definitely immerses you in the sustainability space. You gain first-hand experience contributing to a sustainable cause (i.e., spending a day cleaning up waste in a park or cleaning up the ocean where oyster reefs reside).

We asked Jared...

Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?
I am Israeli, Cuban, and Greek!

What made you choose Deloitte?
I chose Deloitte after speaking with various professionals at the organization who possessed characteristics and attitudes that aligned well with my personality… I saw the dynamic nature and unique opportunities offered through this career path to learn new skills and gain experience across industries.
