Derek co-leads the Australia IP Advisory practice. He focuses on helping companies to create value from intangible assets through aligned strategy, better governance, global collaborations, and commercialisation of intellectual property (IP). He works across Deloitte taking a 360-degree view of IP (IP360) that brings a holistic approach to the management of IP, which includes tax, legal, regulatory, and operations.
Derek is a senior executive with 30 years of experience in the commercialisation of research, leveraging IP to create value, and developing products in Silicon Valley and Sydney across several industries. Most recently he was a global R&D executive at Cochlear leading a team that developed hardware and software products, drove several key external collaborations, and defined and implemented the Cochlear IP Strategy.
Derek was named multiple times to the IAM Strategy 300 – the World’s Leading IP Strategists list. He has extensive global experience having worked in the US and Australia and lead initiatives and teams across Asia and Europe.
