Protecting Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

Making an impact that matters

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – the world’s largest living organism – is a beloved national symbol and a precious world heritage area. Each year, Deloitte provides a pro bono audit service for the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit dedicated to funding research into the Reef’s preservation.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – the world’s largest living organism – comprises 2,900 smaller reefs extending along 2,300km of Queensland’s coastline. As a world heritage area, its preservation for the planet and future generations is a national and global priority. The Reef is home to millions of species of marine plants and animals, including more than 600 types of corals and 1,600 species of fish. As a beloved international symbol of Australia, it contributes an estimated $6 billion annually to the national economy and generates over 70,000 jobs.

Since 2005, Deloitte’s team in Brisbane has been providing pro bono audit services to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to securing and funding research into the Reef’s protection and preservation. Over the past decade, more than $40 million has been generated and carefully allocated by the Foundation to support science that helps preserve while informing, encouraging and inspiring.

Managing Director of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, Anna Marsden, is very appreciative of Deloitte’s ongoing commitment.

“The Great Barrier Reef Foundation places great importance on having solid governance and finance mechanisms in place, which is vital to being a transparent and trustworthy charity. Having Deloitte as our auditor allows us to focus our energies on protecting the Great Barrier Reef while remaining confident our business is sustainable and can grow into the future,” says Anna.

By donating our time and expertise, Deloitte ensures the Foundation’s accounts are expertly audited each year. As external auditor, Deloitte plays a vital role in the organisation’s governance, and makes an impact by freeing up financial resources better spent on important research into a resilient Reef. And to top it off, our team loves getting involved in this rewarding work each year.
