Economic impact of a Western Sydney Airport

Deloitte Access Economics

Planning for future growth of aviation in the Sydney region has generated long running debate.

The need for a second airport is agreed at both federal and state levels, and Deloitte Access Economics has now assessed the economic impact of a new airport at the preferred Western Sydney site of Badgerys Creek.

The issue of whether or not a second Sydney passenger airport should be developed is a complex and long running one, with government policy alternating over the years between additional capacity at the existing Kingsford Smith Airport, expansion of existing general aviation airports and the development of a greenfield site.

The Joint Study on Aviation Capacity in the Sydney Region by the Australian and New South Wales governments, released in March 2012, concluded that a second major airport facility will be required, that immediate steps should be taken to mitigate the long lead time of such a development, and that the Badgerys Creek site in Western Sydney was the preferred option for a second Sydney airport.

This Deloitte Access Economics report, commissioned by the NSW Business Chamber, examines the economic impact of the development of a Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek on the Western Sydney and broader Sydney region.

Key findings

The analysis demonstrates that a second Sydney airport, located in Western Sydney, would generate significant economic benefits for the region and for the state of New South Wales more broadly.

Key findings include:

  • An estimated impact on the Western Sydney economy over the period 2020-2050 of between $9.2 billion and $15.6 billion, and on the whole of Sydney economy of between $15.7 billion and $25.6 billion (in net present value terms)
  • Average additional employment over the same period of between 12,645 and 19,982 FTEs for Western Sydney, and between 20,601 and 31,736 FTE for the Sydney region.
