A move to modernisation

GEHA teams up with Deloitte to transform human resources and finance

How did Deloitte help the Government Employees Health Association (GEHA) transform into a nimble and efficient organisation? Learn how this organisation centralised its human resources and finance functions with the help of Deloitte and Workday.

GEHA had been on a journey to transform into a nimble and efficient organisation. Previously, the organisation relied on spreadsheets for many human resources and finance functions. While these applications crunched numbers and produced reports, they fell short when it came to offering any level of automation or insights into the operation of the business. New leadership in the organisation also presented the opportunity to start fresh in terms of improved operational excellence. Recognising the value of a cloud-based ERP system to centralise its human resources and finance functions, they embarked on a digital transformation journey with Deloitte and Workday.

The first phase in their overall digital transformation involved implementing the Workday HCM solution. With their industry experience, the Deloitte team guided GEHA from design through the deployment of phase 1, which included Workday Human capital management, Time tracking, Compensation, Learning, Benefits, Talent, Payroll, Recruiting, Advanced compensation, and Absence management.

Upon delivering phase I of the project on time and budget, the team set their sights on phase II, working together to implement the Workday Finance solution. Relying on Deloitte’s industry capabilities allowed GEHA to structure their data model in a way that significantly improved the insurance carrier’s ability to produce financial statements by line of business along with improved overall transparency and accountability. The finance implementation included Financial accounting, Projects, Banking and settlements, Procurement, Business assets, Supplier accounts, and Expenses. By “trusting in Deloitte,” the team was able to complete this phase in May 2019.

As a result of the two-phase implementation across HR and finance, GEHA achieved key objectives and resolved longstanding issues including improved employee experience, streamlined business processes, greater transparency throughout the organisation, enhanced leadership decision making and empowerment, improved controls to protect confidential data, and streamlined partner and vendor management processes and relationships.

Most importantly, thanks to careful planning, processes and collaboration with the Deloitte team, GEHA was able to smoothly transition to take the reins to support its goal of becoming a nimble, efficient organisation. Next up, a planned implementation of Workday Adaptive Planning, a solution that enables more efficient business planning across the enterprise. Download the full case study to learn more.

The Deloitte team did a great job enabling the finance team to assume responsibility for the Workday application so that this has now become the backbone of our business processes at GEHA. Since our team is now working from home exclusively during the pandemic, Workday has enabled our success in continuing our business operations and becoming fully virtual.
