Integrated reporting in the Netherlands
What is the state of integrated reporting in the Netherlands? In our annual research on the status of integrated reporting, you find an assessment and comparison between reports of Dutch listed companies. Our research shows that the concept of integrated reporting is increasingly on the rise and embraced more and more by Dutch companies, although there is no legal obligation to prepare an integrated report in the Netherlands.

Involvement, but no significant progress
With a number of frontrunners experimenting with the newly introduced concepts of integrated reporting, as well as a relatively large number of Dutch companies joining the pilot programme of the IIRC, one could say the Netherlands is playing its role in the development towards integrated reporting. Contrary to this observation, we noticed that no significant progress was made in terms of integrated reporting by Dutch listed firms. A conclusion based on our research of the 2012 corporate communications of Dutch listed companies. Deloitte has taken the opportunity to see were these communications stand compared to the recently published <IR> Framework.
Connectivity remains a challenge
It was no surprise that our research shows that many companies still struggle with connectivity. According to Paul Druckman, CEO of the IIRC, there might be two different issues: a problem with communicating connectivity on the one hand and a lack of connectivity within the business on the other hand. “If it is simply a matter of communication, then expert advice can help out. But if there is a lack of connectivity within the business, there could be a serious problem with creating value in the future.”
In our report we have included interviews with representatives of companies involved in sustainability or integrated reports. They share with us their learnings, challenges and sometimes dilemmas in their journey towards integrated reporting.
Dirk Stefels, Eneco’s Manager Sustainability Reporting & Control, shares Eneco’s story on how they improved the connectivity in the 2012 Integrated Report. Eneco has completely changed the look and feel of the report. Neither paper nor PDF, it is digital, and accessible through a web page. Another important improvement was structuring the information around the six pillars of their strategic framework. These six pillars now serve as foundation for Eneco’s integrated report, with each of the KPIs assigned to a particular pillar.
