Life at Deloitte

Shirley Wilson

Transition Accelerator Manager, Birmingham

What do my team and I do?

We offer the opportunity to clients of a Transition Lab, which is a personalised workshop for newly appointed client executives to help them make a powerful and efficient transition into their new role. The full day Lab has been adapted into a half day ‘accelerator’ version and it is my role to manage this programme at a regional level. The programme will be run centrally, but facilitated locally, to ensure our clients are getting a personalised experience.

Where does my team fit?

We are part of the Senior & Boardroom Relationships team, which is one of three that sit within Client Relationship Development for Clients & Industries.

How does my role make an impact that matters with Deloitte?

I honestly cannot think of a better way of helping our clients to be successful than via this programme. What these labs have to offer is genuinely designed to help executives transition into their new roles. People do business with people, so what better way of demonstrating our commitment to the relationship than devoting time to their success.

My biggest accomplishment

My career progression. You don’t have to come with a university degree to progress at Deloitte. I started as Junior Secretary in the Tax service line and progressed steadily to become Secretary for one of the Tax Partners, eventually becoming EA to two successive Practice Senior Partners. Then, about four years ago, I was promoted to Assistant Manager in Consulting, working on relationship development projects, mostly alongside the marketing team. I became the link between the business and the marketing function. After a reorganisation, my role was formalised within the marketing team and I was able to broaden my marketing skill set by getting involved with everything from internal comms to campaign performance analysis. I missed the client contact though, so when my current role was advertised, I jumped at the opportunity. I am really looking forward to the challenge of establishing this new programme. In fact, I am sure everyone is quite excited about it.

What I’m most proud of at Deloitte

Having the courage to say “I can do that”. I’ve enjoyed a lot of different roles over the last eighteen years and that is down to me being brave enough to step outside my comfort zone and take the opportunities when they appeared. You do not have to leave Deloitte to do something new and different.

My favourite part of the job

Working with the Partners on their client portfolios. I enjoy building relationships and the Transition Labs are the perfect way to do that.

Something more about me

I’ve got three teenage children so just arriving at work is sometimes an exercise in resilience.
