What’s the difference between Audit services and Enterprise Risk services … and what do people in each practice do?
Companies face an increasing variety of internal control requirements, including Securities and Exchange Commission rules, Sarbanes-Oxley regulations, GAAP requirements and the evolving issue of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Our AERS practice combines our knowledge and experience in the areas of financial reporting, risk management, and compliance, to help address our clients’ most important issues, with a focus on value and quality. Our specialists provide a range of function- and industry-specific competencies.
Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Audit Services combine a comprehensive audit methodology, state-of-the-art technology, and the knowledge base of our experienced audit professionals. Services include: audits of financial statements, internal control attestation, and assurance services. Whether the client is public or private, you’ll perform audits that assess risk and address the client’s specific needs and circumstances. Deloitte & Touche’s Enterprise Risk Services help clients assess and manage risk and opportunity across all levels of the organization, to improve operational performance. Our risk advisory services enable clients to better identify, manage, and mitigate critical risks in the organization by enhancing the integrity of the control systems, processes, and technologies throughout the enterprise. Our risk advisory services include internal audit, control assurance, security and privacy, capital markets, regulatory consulting, and corporate governance.
What’s it like to work on an AERS team? What are the people like?
Whether you work in Audit Services or Enterprise Risk Services, you can expect to devote a significant amount of time at the client site with your team. You might spend part of your day talking to clients at various levels (from the accounts payable clerk to the CFO). You may examine documents, cancelled checks, and general ledgers, documenting your observations for your clients and team members.
Your team’s structure may vary. For a large engagement, there may be as many as 20-25 people on a team. You may work on multiple client accounts simultaneously. Engagements can be regionally, nationally, or globally focused, and usually involve close interaction with the client’s senior management.
Our AERS professionals come from the top schools, as well as Fortune 500 companies and large professional services organizations. Many ERS professionals have strong technology backgrounds, coupled with accounting skills.

What do you look for in a Deloitte & Touche employee candidate?
Undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting, as well as MIS, technology, computer science, finance, statistics, and math can provide great backgrounds for AERS work.
Many of our Audit hires must have 150 credit hours or a master’s degree in Accounting, in order to sit for the CPA exam in the state where they are hired. Our advanced degree students typically have an MS degree, which they earn in a five-year accounting or similar program. Enterprise Risk Services practitioners typically have a business, finance, accounting and/or technology background, with either formal schooling in or a strong interest in internal audit, computer science, management information systems (MIS) or accounting information systems (AIS). Our advanced degree practitioners typically have an MBA, with an emphasis in finance or information systems.
In addition to these educational requirements, we look for solid team players, analytical thinkers, and those involved with campus and leadership roles. Candidates should display strong verbal and written communication, research, and technology skills. Knowledge of the consulting process is important, as is a strong commitment to business/client relationships and practice development. To protect and maintain the trust of our clients and the public, all of our employees must adhere to the highest regulatory and professional standards.
What kind of work flexibility will I have?
We’ve seen that when our people succeed personally, they are better able to bring value to their clients. The demonstration of this philosophy is the success of the Deloitte U.S. Firms’ work/life balance and flexibility programs, which have earned us recognition as one of the best places to work, and our role as a leader in the retention and advancement of women and diverse professionals.
How much will I travel?
The amount of travel required in Audit Services or Enterprise Risk Services can vary from one engagement to the next, depending on whether your clients are local or not. Since you will frequently be on-site at your client’s office, considerable travel may be required.
