Internal Audit Analytics
Insight in your data
What is Internal Audit Analytics?
Internal Audit Analytics is a Deloitte innovation that uses data analytics for audit purposes. Deloitte Enterprise Risk Services has developed an interactive dashboard to monitor areas of potential controls breakdown. This dashboard, which focusses on the use of data analytics in the internal audit, is named Internal Audit Analytics. The content of the dashboard is such that Internal Audit Analytics can also be of added value to the external audit function.
The key to the success of Internal Audit Analytics is the ability to improve audit detection risk, reduce substantive based procedures, and to provide business information. The tool takes big data and converts it to bite-sized information. Internal Audit Analytics provides the opportunity to apply a data driven approach regarding risk and internal control, thus moving beyond the traditional internal control activities toward an environment of more sophisticated risk analysis and control monitoring.
Internal Audit Analytics consists of a user friendly interactive dashboard that provides insight into your financial data. It allows the user to perform interactive drill-downs and make hands-on combinations while clicking through the data. By doing this, insights of the data and the business are created. These insights and the supporting documentation can easily be exported to your audit file system using Internal Audit Analytics. Internal Audit
Analytics supports your audit in:
•Risk analysis: Determine which risks emerge from the analysis of financial data.
•Controls testing: Test the effectiveness of existing controls such as segregation of duties and logging.
•Substantive testing: Obtain an instant overview of all exceptions in the population. Detailed data is available in Internal Audit Analytics, e.g. journal entry lines and invoice lines.
The Internal Audit Analytics dashboard
Internal Audit Analytics transforms raw source data from ERP or financial systems into useful information, presented in a visually-oriented report. This report is a ready-to-use QlikView dashboard. The source data can consist of any data that is available in your ERP or financial systems. Often-used data consists of:
- General ledger: journal entries
- Accounts payable: purchase orders, invoices, master data
- Accounts receivable: sales orders, invoices, master data.
The provided dashboard consists of two types of output:
- Predefined tests
The predefined tests provide you with instant content for audit findings. These tests list the exceptions to predefined rules. Examples of rules that are configured in Internal Audit Analytics are: journal entries entered on a holiday, booked invoices without a purchase order, sales, accounts receivables entries without material movement, and many more.
The overviews in the Internal Audit Analytics dashboard provide you with standardized views and graphs on the financial data. Examples of these graphs are: posted amounts per period, invoices booked per user and invoice dates vs. payment dates. In these overviews you have the opportunity to interactively drill-down to eye-catching results and (un)known business risks.
