The future of infrastructure

A survey of infrastructure trends

The year 2022 marks a new beginning for infrastructure across the globe.

The pandemic and associated economic disruption are prompting new thinking about infrastructure. Governments around the world are investing in infrastructure to deal with this reality and to help jump-start the recovery.

A new economic reality calls for infrastructure reimagined: more digital, more sustainable, more equitable. From broadband to bike lanes, we asked experts how infrastructure will change.

Some of the findings include:

  • Technology is reshaping infrastructure: AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity technologies are expected to have the most impact on infrastructure projects – 55% of respondents believed AI/machine will have the largest impact.
  • Cybersecurity a top concern: As government shifts to more digital infrastructure, cyber risk becomes a concern - 76% of global infrastructure leaders expect greater focus on data security over the next three years.
  • Green infrastructure is in demand: 60% of respondents globally said that they plan to invest in urban places for walking, cycling, socialising, and eating.
