Q: Tell us about your Deloitte Story.
A: I joined Deloitte as a Graduate in 2017 after completing a Bachelor of Actuarial Studies (Major in Finance) at UNSW. At the same time, I am pursuing the actuarial Fellowship qualification, so am currently sitting professional exams while working. For me, the last three years has really been a balancing act of trying to stay motivated with the study while still performing from a project perspective (and still have ‘me’ time in between all of that). Luckily, Deloitte is supportive of the study and provides additional leave and financial support to help us on our way through the exams, and I’ll hopefully be finished within the next 12 months!
Q: What attracted you to Deloitte?
A: While looking for graduate opportunities in the actuarial profession, Deloitte appealed to me for its exposure to a wide variety of sectors, clients and projects. While on paper, I knew it would be a fantastic opportunity, I also felt a real connection to the people that I interacted with throughout the recruitment process. It felt like a natural fit.
Q: What type of projects are you working on and in which industries/sectors?
A: I have primarily worked in the superannuation and life insurance sectors since joining Deloitte. The work varies, from more traditional actuarial valuations to transaction activity and program delivery/implementation work. Clients often come to us because of our technical expertise and strong understanding of their businesses, allowing us to play an advisory role in a variety of different areas.
Q: Can you tell us a little more about the area of Consulting you work in?
A: I am part of the Actuaries & Consultants practice, which sits under the umbrella of the Actuarial Agenda. Our team is made up of qualified and studying actuaries, data scientists, a lawyer, an occupational therapist, and others! We were also recently joined by the Investment & Wealth Advisory team who previously worked within Audit & Assurance.
While we have a strong technical footing, our team is all about client delivery and being able to deliver insights that are data-driven and relevant, giving the client something that they can and want to work with.
Q: What’s the culture like at Deloitte?
A: Deloitte is a fast-paced work environment where we are constantly seeking out new opportunities. It’s not about doing the same thing, the same way, rather looking at how we can do things better or how we can position ourselves to work in new areas, which makes it a pretty exciting place to be.
You get out of it what you put in, so it’s really up to you to make the most of the opportunities available.
Q: Why should people join Consulting?
A: Consulting gives you the scope to do any and all types of work. You’ll work alongside some brilliant people from a wide range of backgrounds and can make lasting connections with clients. For me, it’s really given me a chance to explore several possible career paths and opened my eyes to the opportunities available out there.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working for Deloitte?
A: I really enjoy working as part of team. Every team or client meeting is an opportunity to learn from the experience of those around you, and we work alongside such interesting and intelligent people that it makes the projects really engaging.
Q: What would be your top tip for success?
A: Don’t get too comfortable. My greatest personal growth has come from those challenges that I probably didn’t feel entirely comfortable with in the beginning. Back yourself and know that you are surrounded by a team with experience that is there is to be drawn upon and support you. (I’m still not good at this but am trying!)
Helena works as an actuarial consultant primarily in the superannuation and life insurance sectors. Her experience spans outsourcing tenders, M&A transaction and separation support, governance reviews, and traditional actuarial valuations. Helena is currently studying towards her Fellowship with the Institute of Actuaries Australia qualification.
