Our Western Sydney office is growing rapidly. And with this growth comes the need for talented professionals to join our team! We chat to Justin Tomas, an Analyst in Deloitte Private, to find out what drew him to the Western Sydney office and get a feel for what it’s like working in NSW’s fastest growing region.
How’d you come to work at Deloitte?
I came on board as a Grad in 2016. I actually studied my degree at Western Sydney – which is just around the corner from the Deloitte building! So I felt a real sense of accomplishment when I got accepted into the program.
Why the Western Sydney office?
Well I grew up on the border of Fairfield and Liverpool. So for me Western Sydney’s my home. It’s where I work, it’s where I play. I really care about the region and the businesses around here.
My dad owned his own business as a mechanic and growing up I would travel with him to jobs and help with the administrative side of the business. My mum also always made sure we supported local businesses.
So I’ve grown up with that mentality to support the little guy and small businesses.
Is that why you chose to work for Deloitte Private?
Yep! Because I work in Deloitte Private my clients are privately owned businesses – so that includes small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs. They’re risk takers. They’ve put up their own capital to back their ideas.
Having grown up around that and seeing my dad work around the clock, I know the blood, sweat and tears that goes into building something from the ground up.
It feels like I’ve come full circle because I’ve done my tax training and I’m doing my CA at the moment, so it’s cool that I’m able to apply this knowledge and advise small businesses in the area I grew up in.
It’s really rewarding! You feel like you’re part of the whole growing business ecosystem in Western Sydney.
What’s the best part of your job?
Working directly with entrepreneurs and being part of their business’ growth journey. I’ll give you an example. One of my clients, their business just started out as 3 guys with an idea.
I was there the day they got acquired by an ASX-listed company. One of the owners popped a bottle of champagne and he absolutely drenched me in it! You really feel like you take that journey with them.
There are a lot of highs and lows when running your own business, so I get to ride that emotional rollercoaster with my clients.
What’s your team like?
My team is very hard working. My colleagues work around the clock to make sure we deliver to clients on time. We also know how to have fun and do things such as team lunches and after work drinks.
What’s something you didn’t expect to find in Western Sydney?
I was out for a jog a few months ago and stumbled across a co-working space and realised there’s an emerging tech and start-up scene here in Parramatta! It’s only a small scene at the moment, but it’s cool to see that you don’t have to go into the CBD to establish your start-up.
I’m friends with the owner now – we both love tech and we just instantly clicked. So it’s interesting that my networks have grown and evolved just by wandering around the Parramatta CBD.
What’s different about working in Western Sydney?
It’s a defining moment for Western Sydney right now. Which means you can get in at the ground floor of something special.
The Sydney CBD is already established. But in Parramatta, the area’s growing. I actually see the growth plans come to life through my clients. With massive infrastructure projects like the WestConnex and Badgerys Creek Airport, you can see that Sydney’s West is going to be completely different in 20,30,40 years from now.
Being part of growing the region is the real drawcard for me!
