Meet Bridie, First Nations Intern

Time out with a Deloitte Intern

Bridie joined us as an intern over the summer as part of our First Nations Program.
Studying a Batchelor of Science at ANU, Bridie joined us in our Consulting team in Canberra.

Tell us about your role and what work you got involved in?

During my time at Deloitte, I had the chance to work on two different client projects. After learning the ropes and getting up to date, for my first project, I was tasked with helping to design a package of client presentations. I found this task to be both a fun and challenging project.

In my second project, I had the chance to do some beta-testing, which was very interesting. I also got to work on a model report and help problem solve the best way to present information to the client. Overall, it was very cool to see what goes on behind the scenes of a project.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to work on a very important initiative about how Deloitte has addressed Australia Day. The initiative comprised of several interviews of Deloitte employees conducted by me and my fellow Indigenous Vacationer. A narrative was then written based on the interviews and presented to the Indigenous Leadership Team. This was a great experience and I learnt so much from it.

What inspired you to study in your degree area?

I grew up enjoying all things science fiction, from video games to TV shows. However, it wasn’t until my later years of high school that I realised that I wanted to study science. I had a great physics teacher during year 12, who was very passionate about science and encouraged me to study it at uni. I am now specialising in biomedical science and I love every minute of it.

Why did you want to join Deloitte?

At first, I didn’t know much about Deloitte, as I come from a science background. But as soon as I did some research, I found out they were a company that I wanted to work for. I could see that Deloitte offered an invaluable experience that really focuses on skill development. Deloitte also offered the chance to work with immensely intelligent and creative people on a number of different projects.

I also knew that Deloitte values diversity and offers a culturally inclusive work environment, which is important to me as an Indigenous person.

Can you tell us about the support you received as part of the program?

At Deloitte, they assign you a buddy and a coach. I met my buddy on my first day and we instantly clicked. She was so lovely and never hesitated to answer any of my questions, even outside of work hours. She made sure to check in on me at least once a week to see how I was going.

My coach was just as lovely. We had regular catch-ups to see how I was progressing through each of the projects I worked on, which allowed me to develop my skills.

They both gave me incredible support throughout my time at Deloitte and made the experience all the more enjoyable.

What part of the Program experience did you enjoy most?

To be completely honest, I enjoyed the people the most. This program gave me the opportunity to meet and get to know some really awesome people ranging from Partners to graduates. I learnt so much from each person I met. Everyone was super friendly and was always happy to help me develop my skills or discuss the basics of consulting. I still keep in touch with several people I met during this program.

Why would you encourage others to consider joining the First Nations Internship program at Deloitte?

There are so many reasons why I would encourage other Indigenous peoples to join this program. I could easily tell that every aspect of this program was well thought out and was developed with our cultural background in mind. This offered a unique and invaluable experience that is not found anywhere else but Deloitte.

There were several workshops given by Indigenous employees of Deloitte. These workshops allowed us to gain greater insight into what it would be like to work for Deloitte. During these sessions, we were also able to build positive work relationships with these people, who then became a vital part of our support network during the program.

Overall, being a part of this program was a very positive experience and is one that I'll never forget.
