Meet Emily, a Financial Advisory Graduate working within our Mergers & Acquisitions Valuations team.
Emily completed a BA Commerce (Accounting & Finance) at Curtin University.
Thanks for joining us to share your #DeloitteStory. What can you tell us about your role and the work you're involved in?
I'm an analyst within M&A under the Financial Advisory business line, in their Valuations team. The team provides valuation opinions and advice in situations of strategic change and commercial importance.
My role at Deloitte involves conducting market and financial research, analysis and benchmarking. I use a range of valuation methods, modelling techniques and analytical tools such as S&P Capital IQ, Bloomberg, Thomson One and the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Additionally, I'm involved in valuation report writing to articulate our findings. My role also involves client meetings and team collaboration and discussions.
Why did you choose Deloitte to start your career?
What attracted me to Deloitte was the vast amounts of learning and development opportunities available. As a graduate it was important to me to be apart of a company that valued upskilling it’s employees and providing them the tools to succeed in the future.
What projects have you worked on, and can you tell us about some of the skills or experiences you've gained?
I have worked on projects in the waste management and mining industries. Being located in Western Australia, a state known for its mining, a lot of our projects are in the mining space.
Working on these projects has given me a deeper understanding of the mining sector including the business operations of a mining company, in addition to the various mining processes and exploration techniques.
Further, I have been able to develop my analytical skills through conducting extensive market and financial research and report writing. I have also been able to strengthen my communication and presentation abilities through client discussions and internal collaborations.
What type of activities keep you engaged in with others in your Graduate class?
I catch up with the other grads quite frequently! The grads in the financial advisory business line will generally have lunch together, (if we are all in the office that day and not working from home!). We also catchup on a Friday after work for a bite to eat or get coffee in the morning together.
Additionally, the Talent team has set up a few graduate networking events that give you the opportunity to mingle with the other grads.
As a Graduate with us, you've got access to lots of people for coaching and support. Can you tell us about how this has supported your program experience?
Having been assigned a coach and buddy was invaluable to my graduate experience.
I commenced with the firm in 2020, through the Covid-19 period and transitioned almost instantly to working from home. This was quite a change from what I initially expected, so having someone checking in with me daily and being able to ask any questions to was very reassuring.
Lastly, what advice would you share to someone still at university who's interested in a career in professional services?
My advice would be to apply for a vacationer position. This will give you the opportunity to try out the role to see what’s involved, in addition to showing the team you’re the right candidate for the job.
Additionally, I would also advise getting involved in as many co-curricular/networking events as you can! Deloitte hosts several networking events, where you can meet staff at Deloitte and pick their brains on any questions you may have. It also shows you have a desire to collaborate and learn.
