Emergency department presentations in Australia

The relative contribution of alcohol

This report for the Brewers Association of Australia examines the relative contribution of alcohol to emergency department presentations across years and jurisdictions, and makes comparisons with other published studies.

Our analysis of official data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare indicates that alcohol is responsible for a small and declining share of emergency department presentations. These data have only recently become available. Prior research into this topic has likely overestimated the relative contribution of alcohol due to deficiencies in study methodologies which relied on proxy measures.
