Tourism Market Outlook 2022 - edition 2

Demand for travel remarkably resilient despite economic headwinds

Australia’s tourism sector is now well on the path to recovery.

Domestic activity has bounced back faster than initially expected, while the return of international visitors to Australia will take longer, slowed by constraints in aviation capacity and impeded by the continuing travel restrictions from China.

The pandemic and associated economic disruption have reshaped Australia’s tourism sector like never before, with operators working extraordinary hard to battle through an unprecedented range of challenges.

Now, with the recovery of travel finally underway, the tourism sector is facing a different set of challenges including high and persistent inflation, rising interest rates, and a volatile geopolitical environment which risk a global recession.

While high concerns around the cost of living are evident in Australia and among our key international source markets, intentions to spend on travel remain persistently strong.

The forecasts include consideration of global economic conditions, industry capacity and consumer sentiment among other factors. A downgrade in the prospects of the global economy, higher and more persistent inflation and energy costs, a further escalation of geopolitical tensions are the downside risks to the recovery of global tourism, with flow on impacts to the Australian tourism market.
