Emergence of the Ecosystems Architect

A Financial Services Perspective

We explore the evolution of the Enterprise Architect in the digital age amid rapid business and technology disruption. We introduce the key roles that the Enterprise Architect would need to play and the skills they will be required to master.

The conventional practice of Enterprise Architecture is often a CIO driven organisation that focusses on alignment of the internal technology capability with the business strategy, usually in the context of improving the underlying technology. Currently, there is an ingrained perspective within most organisations that Enterprise Architecture is a subset of the technology department and primarily deals with documentation of application and technology portfolios. This perspective brings us to the underlying issue: Enterprise Architecture only focusses on the uplift of the existing internal technology capability to help meet business’ strategic objectives, rather than as a strategic business enabler.

With the rapid disruption that the digital era has brought, technology leaders are coming to realise that unpacking the business motivation, value chain and business capabilities with a focus on how things will work within a business ecosystem is crucial to align business and IT planning. Enterprise Architects (EAs) now need to focus not only internally on the development of existing platforms and business capability, but externally on new business strategies, partners and models as well. The speed of change in technology, along with the disruptive operating models they give rise to, require enterprise architects to evolve to ensure their organisation can reap the maximum possible benefits from the disruption.
