10 June 2014: Deloitte Australia announced today that effective 1 July 2014 it has promoted 56 new partners, of whom 17 are women, boosting the 37 experienced lateral hires, including an additional 7 female partners, who have joined the partnership in the last 12 months.

In a challenging professional services market, Deloitte also announced annual revenues of $1.162B for the year ending 31 May 2014, up by 6.5 per cent on its revenues from the previous year.

Giam Swiegers, Deloitte CEO commented: “The global trends driving changes across professional services and consulting have seen our strategy evolve over the past two years. In addition to investing in our consulting and advisory services, this has included the redesign of our heritage services in tax, audit and accounting. Our significant investment in design thinking has helped us shape our offerings to ensure a more relevant and informative experience for our clients, whether in senior management, on Boards or within Government departments and agencies.

“It has also included investments in the ongoing digitisation of our services and processes, with better access to advanced analytics, online portals and dashboards.

“While I am delighted that our investments in analytics, technology and economics in recent years correctly anticipated the market’s growing appetite for these skills, the Australian economy continues to rapidly restructure, placing pressure on public, private and not-for-profit organisations to transform and meet the challenges of future growth and performance management.

“For this reason one of the most important investments we’ve made this year, is in the continuing exposure of all of our partners to world class leadership and strategy training. It is a critical factor in driving successful change throughout our firm.

“Deloitte’s philosophy has always been that preparedness beats prediction,” continued Mr Swiegers. “It means making the right investment choices, and backing the people and practices best able to leverage the profitable growth our analysis indicates is possible in Australia. And it means helping our clients turn things to their advantage, and see the opportunities that a challenging economy and disrupted markets present them.

“Our investment in 93 new partners clearly demonstrates our confidence in the Australian economy’s outlook, and in the future growth waves we predicted in our latest Building the Lucky Country report: Positioning for prosperity? Catching the next wave.

“Our economic research identified the growth potential (in addition to mining) that businesses such as ours can harness to drive our future growth. The extraordinarily positive reception the paper has had across business and government attests to the fact that despite sluggish economic growth over recent years, there are many sound opportunities that can be harnessed to drive future growth.

“At Deloitte, we are certainly examining our own skills mix with these future growth pockets in mind.”

Mr Swiegers highlighted investments such as:

•the expansion of Deloitte’s office in Western Sydney, currently one of the fastest growing regional economies in the country
•the roll out of the firm’s cloud-based accounting approach, Deloitte Private Connect
•a range of digital, data and technology transactions boosting Deloitte’s strength in digital and data including partnering across Asia with other Deloitte member firms to further boost the globalisation of the network of Deloitte Digital practices
•an ongoing investment in data capabilities in both the private and public sector
•building our dedicated design thinking centres to facilitate co-creation of solutions with clients
•Deloitte’s focus on financial transformation, giving private and public sector organisations greater oversight and efficiency across their finance function

Women feature strongly in this year’s round of promotions, making up 30 per cent of the new intake. Women now represent 22 per cent of the Deloitte partnership. The market has continued to recognise Deloitte’s diversity achievements selecting the leader of its Inspiring Women program Margaret Dreyer as one of the AFR’s 100 Most Influential Women 2013, while awarding the firm Inclusive Workplace of the Year in the AHRI Diversity Awards.

“While we are making progress there is still much to be done. I remain determined to cement Deloitte’s leadership role in the business community as one of Australia’s best employers for women,” Mr Swiegers said.

Reflecting the impact of Deloitte’s investment in innovation and design thinking, Deloitte also won both the Accounting Firm of the Year and the Audit Firm of the Year in the Financial Review CFO Awards 2013 – the first time in the awards’ history that any firm has taken out both awards in the same year.
