Deloitte appoints new Western Australia R&D leader
4 May 2018: Deloitte today announced the appointment of Mark Upton as a tax partner in the firm’s Perth office and its new R&D leader for Western Australia.
Mark joins from EY where he was a partner in the R&D team. His career began as a geologist with global gold company, Normandy Mining, before he moved to London to take up a business analyst role. He has now amassed over 15 years’ experience advising and preparing strategically focussed R&D claims across multiple industries, predominantly in resources, agriculture and emerging technology. He has been the lead partner on a number of R&D claims for Australia’s largest mining companies.
Jonathan Schneider, Deloitte Western Australia Tax leader, said: “Mark’s background enables him to deeply understand clients’ operations and ambitions, quickly evaluate projects and deliver efficient R&D outcomes at each point in a project. His strong R&D technical capabilities will be an asset in helping our large scale resources clients to successfully navigate the new R&D environment and associated risks, in addition to meeting the ever-changing compliance needs of the market.”
Mark will also take over the reins as Western Australia R&D leader from Ron van Beek who has recently retired from the firm.
“Our R&D practice in Western Australia has grown significantly under Ron’s leadership over the past nine years and now under Mark’s. We thank Ron for his years of service at Deloitte and, following a long and distinguished career, wish him well in his retirement,” Schneider said.
Mark Upton said: “I am really excited about the move to Deloitte and the opportunity to lead its dynamic and growing R&D team in Western Australia. Deloitte’s differentiated market approach, impressive growth and broader consulting opportunities are what attracted me to the firm. I’m looking forward to helping our clients identify and scope multiple areas of business improvement.”
