Deloitte calls for social innovators

Firm sponsors design award for excellence in solving complex problems

3 March 2016: Deloitte Australia has underscored its commitment to seeking unique solutions to complex social problems with the announcement that the firm will sponsor the Social Innovation category of the 2016 Australian Good Design Awards.

According to Deloitte Australia’s CEO Cindy Hook, “Supporting social innovation to make an impact that matters goes to the heart of our identity. We are a firm committed to transformational change for a better society. We are therefore proud to sponsor an award that encourages and rewards new ways to solve complex problems.”

Deloitte has a dedicated Social Impact Consulting Practice that works at the intersection of government, business and the not-for-profit (NFP) sector to tackle society’s most complex social challenges and deliver greater social impact. The practice brings the best of Deloitte’s expertise combined with the firm’s passion for the sector to help its clients deliver lasting social change across: Human Services, Disability, Aged Care, Indigenous and International Aid and Development.

Australia was ranked the tenth most socially advanced nation in the 2015 Social Progress Index yet was found to underperform on ‘shelter’ partly due to the poor quality of its electricity supply and decreasing housing affordability. It also rated poorly on the measure of ‘access to basic knowledge’ as well as ‘obesity’.

“To maintain our investment in social progress and wellbeing, we need to embrace smarter and more inclusive policy approaches in health and education in particular,” Cindy said.

“Deloitte has long been at the forefront of creating good design solutions in the context of business, public and social sector organisations. In 2013 the firm was awarded an Australian International Design AwardTM for its audit services in what was a first for a professional services firm,” Cindy said.

She encouraged all organisations and individuals with transformational ideas that tackle society’s most complex social challenges and deliver tangible social impact to enter the awards. She said the winner of the Social Innovation award category would receive significant pro bono support from Deloitte.

Managed by Good Design Australia, the annual Good Design Awards program recognises and rewards excellence in design, innovation and creativity at a national and international level.

Dr Brandon Gien from Good Design Australia said Deloitte’s sponsorship of the Social Innovation category of the awards was evidence the firm understands that design is - and will continue to be - a vital differentiator in the achievement of future economic and business success. “More than most organisations, Deloitte truly gets design” he said.

Entries to the 2016 Good Design Awards close on 15 April 2016. Winners will be announced on 27 May.
