What has a lush, live, digital plant wall got to do with a bank and a professional services firm?

27 May 2016: Well why wouldn’t you get involved in creating an ‘off the wall’, ‘out of the blue’ concept when you occupy prime real estate in Sydney’s landmark Martin Place? And especially when you go live on the eve of Sydney’s state-of-the-art Vivid Festival - where art, technology and commerce intersect?

Situated as this ‘virtual garden’ is, in the very heart of the #VividSydney festival of light, music and ideas, where more than 180 years ago, ANZ opened its very first branch just around the corner in the city’s main CBD thoroughfare, it seemed to be an idea just waiting to happen.

And as a bank that is determined to explore integrated technology and innovation to create delightful customer experiences, it made sense to reach out to Deloitte Digital. A creative house where left brains meet right, with a reputation for taking ideas from digital evolution to revolution, and with an experienced multi-faceted design team who they know can turn strategy into deliverables.

And actually who just love to use their smarts to delight clients and celebrate their digital credentials, by creating experiences.

The Deloitte Digital creative team led by Daniel Cheong-See and Rob Weir, who created the #ANZVirtualGarden, talk passionately of fusion and morphing something quite complex into an easily digestible, engaging, captivating, evolving installation that makes people feel welcome and encourages them to interact, be playful and explore a new – and in this case – virtual natural world.

So what is a virtual garden anyway?

The garden is a fully interactive 11 metre high digital wall that spans three levels of the Martin Place branch - the largest branch in the ANZ network - and responds to changes in the environment, including weather, time of day, and customers’ twitter instructions.

Customers can tweet the digital wall using #ANZVirtualGarden to request butterflies, birds, dragonflies, ladybirds or fireflies, along with flowers, mushrooms and a waterfall. They can change the colours and request more or fewer creatures.

Daniel Cheong-See explains that the virtual garden is also shaped by what’s happening in the real world through location-based data driving the animation. “It reflects the seasons and changes in light – the sunrises and sunsets have been awesome in Sydney lately – as well as the weather conditions. It’s just perfect for Vivid.”

For the geeks the virtual garden is built in Unity, a multi-platform game engine, which supports the changing data that feeds the custom software and results in the ever-changing digital wall.

Rob Weir says: “We are really pleased with the results, as it is unique and original piece of work that challenges what people conventionally do with digital media by making it living and changing. We wanted to help ANZ surprise and delight Sydneysiders by adding value to the people and public spaces of Sydney.”
