Key appointment boosts Deloitte’s growing retail practice
26 July 2016: Deloitte today announced the appointment of retail specialist Tom Compernolle to further develop its consulting retail practice across Australia.
Tom brings experience from a consulting career spanning 40 years serving retail and wholesale clients, primarily in the US, but also across the globe. He joins Deloitte Australia as a partner from the Deloitte US firm where he led the US consulting practice in the food, pharmacy and mass merchandise sectors. He will focus on helping improve retailers’ strategies, operations and customer experience.
“This is a testing time for the Australian retail sector and it signals the start of a significant transition phase,” said Compernolle.
“The market is being disrupted by the growing presence of low cost operators, some from overseas, and this is challenging the business models of the established Australian retail base. The surge in value retailing that transformed the US food retail market appears to be in a similar, but early, stage here. There are many lessons learned from that experience which can apply in the Australian market.”
David White, national leader of Deloitte’s Retail, Wholesale & Distribution Group, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Tom to the Deloitte Australia retail practice. The Australian retail sector is entering a period of unprecedented change and Tom’s experiences and deep understanding of the US market will be invaluable to retailers operating in Australia.”
Compernolle added: “Digital disruption has created opportunities for consumer engagement inconceivable just 10 years ago. I look forward to working with the Deloitte Digital team here by supplementing their experience with some of the innovative examples I have seen in the US.”
Matthew Pieroni, Deloitte Consulting’s Consumer and Industrial Products lead noted: “With the addition of Tom to the team, we are investing to ensure our retail clients have access to a full range of Deloitte’s retail and customer solutions, and we expect further appointments of more innovators to follow.”
