Innovative platform engineering & integration the focus as Sixtree joins Deloitte

19 July 2016: Deloitte is set to further expand its technology offerings, with the team from boutique integration specialist Sixtree to join the professional services firm.

Sixtree works with clients to embrace the change many of them are struggling with – using a platform-led approach to structuring and integrating legacy and emerging technologies, more effectively and securely.

Sixtree was founded in 2010 by Ben Wylie, Brett Wilson and Yamen Sader. Their team will form the core of a new platform engineering unit within Deloitte Consulting’s technology advisory practice.

Wylie and Sader will become Deloitte Consulting partners, and Wilson and Chief Technology Officer Saul Caganoff will become principals. The 45-strong team will join Deloitte in Melbourne and Sydney. The team from Sixtree’s New Zealand business will also join Deloitte New Zealand.

Deloitte Consulting Managing Partner Robert Hillard said the move was another strategic investment and building block for the firm’s technology practice and end-to-end, client-specific business solutions.

“We’ve been through back office and customer technology change waves. We’re now seeing a new wave, where the next generation of cloud-enabled digital technologies are changing the way people work. And this is where Sixtree and its platform integration capabilities and client solutions, in addition to our existing customer and digital teams, comes in,” he said.

“By essentially re-engineering and integrating an organisation’s systems, the deep expertise offered by the Sixtree team will help increase business agility by bringing legacy and new technologies together quickly, seamlessly and effectively.”

Deloitte Consulting partner and platform engineering leader, Clifford Foster, said: “The capabilities of the Sixtree team are relevant for organisations of every size, and across all sectors, and are increasingly required as part of large-scale transformation projects.

“They enable generally older businesses that have become rigid, and even trapped by outdated, unintegrated technology systems, to become ‘younger’ and more agile by wrapping digital applications and new technologies into an adaptable platform to meet immediate, medium and longer term needs.

“We’ve collaborated successfully with Sixtree in the past, and this move is a natural evolution of the relationship. It will allow us to build a platform engineering business that will give our clients the capability and confidence to execute strategy and differentiate themselves from their competitors.”

Deloitte Chief Executive Officer Cindy Hook said: “This move is another differentiator for our firm in terms of the technology advisory services we offer our clients.

“Similar to our platform-led Deloitte Private Connect offering for SMEs, the expertise of the Sixtree team helps overcome underlying concerns about technology so organisations can do what they do best with the confidence that the systems supporting their operations are working as one.”

Sixtree Chief Technology Officer Saul Caganoff said: “Only five years ago, businesses were happy to outsource everything to big system-wide integrators and build multi-year projects that ultimately failed as they were too ambitious and too inflexible.

“But huge changes in the way companies do business and how technology gets delivered have quickly emerged. Platform engineering and innovative solutions are the keys to enabling value and transformation quickly and incrementally, with ecosystems built through connectivity with modern and emerging technology partner and cloud providers.

“Our client-centric business values match well with Deloitte’s, along with our commitments to innovation and change. They get what we do and the value we can deliver, and there are clear synergies, complementary skills and capabilities in terms of what we are doing and where we want to go.”

Sixtree specialises in a range of leading technologies, including those from MuleSoft, Red Hat, Elastic, and Amazon Web Services.

The team will remain a strong advocate for open source technology and continue to sponsor open source projects, developer community meetups and hackathons.

The Sixtree move builds on other technology and related transactions and alliances Deloitte has achieved in recent years, including teams from:

  • Cloud Solutions Group (changing the way cloud infrastructure advisory services are delivered)
  • Qubit Consulting (making Deloitte Australia’s largest provider of identity and access management services)
  • Dataweave (Oracle implementation services, identity management and cloud solution delivery)
  • Digivizer (providing real-time social analytics to strategic business consulting).

Deloitte also recently announced the global launch of Deloitte Pixel™ that works to create effective outputs from crowdsourcing specialist insights into client or industry problems or challenges.
