Stories from our transport team

Meet Simon
We sat down with Simon Moses, a Director here at Deloitte, and discussed his journey and experience working in the transport team.
Can you tell us a bit about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?
I advise state and federal government agencies, national and international companies, and consortia on the development and delivery of some of Australia's and New Zealand's largest and most high-profile infrastructure (including by way of PPP/P3), urban renewal projects, and procurement processes. I am regularly called upon to assist in finding the balance between legal risk and commercial and strategic imperatives.
Why would you encourage others to join Deloitte's transport sector team?
Deloitte is a place where every person, no matter their level, is willing to roll up their sleeves to deliver great outcomes and impact to our clients.
Can you share an example of a time you made an impact on your clients, teams, or community that you are proud of?
In addition to my role at Deloitte, I am on the Board of Directors' Risk and Planning Committee for Sydney WorldPride 2023, the global LGBTIQ+ festival which Sydney has won the rights to host in 2023.
How do you manage your work and personal life/interests using Deloitte Flex?
My weeks are typically quite busy traveling for work. Deloitte Flex allows me to carve out moments in my week to do the things that I want to do, like get out and go for a paddle.
Simon making the most of DeloitteFlex and going out for a paddle.
How does Deloitte build a safe and inclusive culture? Are there any examples or leadership behaviours that you can share?
I am the Australian Co-Lead of Deloitte's Infrastructure & Capital Projects Global Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Network. Through our global network, we are championing – with the full support of Deloitte's global leadership – diversity and inclusion in the infrastructure sector, including the transport sector.
What makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and inspiring place for someone to work?
From day 1, you can bring your whole self to work.

Meet Britt
We chatted with Britt Satchell, Graduate, around her journey in the transport team here at Deloitte, and how her previous experience being a Heavy Vehicle Operator has helped her flourish in her role.
Before joining Deloitte, were you working in the transport sector?
Yes, I was a Heavy Vehicle Operator for over six years.
What can you tell us about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?
I work within the Human Capital team here at Deloitte. I find that working in this team allows me to utilise my frontline experience to help other organisations find ways to unlock the potential of their people. The types of work I’ve been involved in range from change management for technology adoptions, to most recently a rapid op model review.
The day Britt passed her driver accreditation test to become the youngest and only female driver on the Sunshine Coast at just 22 years old.
Can you share an example of a time you made an impact on your clients, teams, or community that you are proud of?
I was involved in the creation of animated videos for our client to support training material around their new mobile inventory system. Originally, the client was looking to use an internal employee as the voiceover, however, I took the initiative and recorded myself for all the voiceovers, they were thrilled with what I had produced and my commitment to this project.
Why would you encourage others to join Deloitte’s transport sector team?
I would encourage anyone who has a passion for the transport sector to join Deloitte, no matter the type of experience you have. You will be surprised at how valuable and transferrable your insights and experience are.
What has been your experience with Deloitte training, development, and learning programs?
The professional development opportunities are second to none.
How do you manage your work and personal life/interests using Deloitte Flex?
I live on the Sunshine Coast with my partner and family, and I find having the flexibility to choose how, when, and even where I work is integral to achieving a sustainable work-life balance.
Why did you want to join Deloitte?
I joined Deloitte because I want to make an impact and be a part of bringing positive change.

What makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and inspiring place for someone to work?
I joined through the vacationer to the graduate program. I was surprised at how my voice and prior experiences have been respected and valued at each level.
Anything else?
Having only recently joined Deloitte and the transport community, I have found it incredibly interesting the variety of backgrounds and differing career paths within the team. Everyone has their own unique experience that has brought them to this point, but we all share the same passion for creating a positive impact now and into the future.

Meet Damian
We chatted with Damian Garnham, Lead Partner for our transport sector, about his journey in the transport team at Deloitte from Graduate to now.
Before joining Deloitte, were you working in the transport sector?
I joined Deloitte as a Graduate, so I like to think I grew into transport over the years. It was something that I experienced for the first time while I was working in the UK, and as one project led to another, and I made an impact with clients, I got the bug.
What can you tell us about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?
I lead our transport sector within Australia, which I've done since late 2020. Prior to this, I had a similar role in the UK where I led all our advisory services for the transport sector.
What transport projects have you worked on at Deloitte, and can you tell us about some of the skills or experiences you've gained?
One that jumps out for me was for a major rail project in the UK. This initiative was focused on building rail to connect Oxford and Cambridge, and part of this project was the recovery of old railways that had been closed in the 1960s - which came with a bit of an emotional attachment. What I most enjoyed about this project is that were brought into the journey before the organisation was formed. This allowed us the opportunity to be with stakeholders and leaders of the project from the very start and help them go from a business that was non-existent, to one of 100+ employees.
Can you share an example of a time you made an impact on your clients, teams, or community that you are proud of?
I love being involved in projects that have direct, tangible benefits for the community. In London, I worked on the rollout of a shared bicycle hire scheme, helping optimise the deployment of 400-500 charging point networks and all the technologies that went along with it. I loved that I would walk past the bikes on my way to work, and I knew I was directly involved in supporting this initiative. It was just ultra-tangible.
What's something that's surprised you with the work and your role?
The breadth of what we do at Deloitte, and the number of different skills and talent we have in the firm.
What makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and/or inspiring place for someone to work?
Deloitte gives you a space to grow and challenge yourself when you want to.
Why would you encourage others to join Deloitte’s transport sector team?
The interesting thing about the transport sector is that people tend to stick with it. Because of that, I’ve found that you can develop long-lasting relationships quite quickly and naturally.

Meet Caitlin
We chatted to Caitlin Banaghan, Senior Consultant, about her experiences, highlights, and journey in the transport team here at Deloitte.
What can you tell us about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?
Over the last four years, I have primarily been involved in large-scale business transformation projects for clients within both rail (passenger and freight) and road. I'm also a part of the National Transport Community, bringing together practitioners of all levels and across all business units to build connections, share knowledge and grow our internal transport community within Deloitte.
What transport projects have you worked on at Deloitte, and can you tell us about some of the skills or experiences you've gained?
A project that stands out for me was working with a client within freight to understand challenges and opportunities for their business over the next decade.
The ability to run freight through the transport network is so vital to connecting communities, supporting economic development, and the growth of the state.
Working through this problem with the client was both challenging, in the sense that it involved large stakeholder consultation as well as detailed industry knowledge, and rewarding, as it is a strategic question that must be answered for both the state and nationally.
What's something that's surprised you with the work and your role?
Two happy surprises within my current role and projects were:
- The vast network of transport subject matter experts, thought leadership, and global connections.
- Support and guidance on projects from all levels. Everyone wants each other to succeed and deliver the best product for our clients.
What type of activities keep you engaged in Deloitte's national transport sector community?
The local events, where we can gather as cross-level and cross-business units to connect in person and share achievements, learnings, and industry knowledge.
Why would you encourage others to join Deloitte's transport sector team?
It is an exciting time for the transport industry, particularly as we look to be sustainable as we expand our networks. The network you join at Deloitte is exciting, fast-paced, collaborative, and industry-leading.
What makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and/or inspiring place for someone to work?
Being a part of the Deloitte team stretches beyond career, into social impact opportunities as well as social team events.
There are a number of fun social events across the year, including the annual Deloitte ball, team training days as well as social drinks and games.
One of the key social impact opportunities I have been a part of was the Oxfam Trailwalker, an event that Deloitte sponsors. Our team of four hiked 100km, which I found an amazing sense of achievement through our fundraising efforts, as well as both a physical and mental achievement.
The pride which Deloitte has in giving back to our team, the community, and supporting positive social change makes me proud to come to work each day.

Within my role at Deloitte, I have worked across several transport projects focusing on improving integrated operations planning to connect organisational strategy with operational plans to improve outcomes.
What transport projects have you worked on at Deloitte, and can you tell us about some of the skills or experiences you've gained?
I have worked predominantly with rail based providers on a wide range of projects, from determining the customer impacts of timetable and future infrastructure changes, to determining the capacity of a network for passenger and freight services. The diverse problems we have tackled have allowed me to work with a tight-knit team from across Deloitte divisions and form close relationships with our clients.
Professionally, I have gained fantastic experience in delivering data-driven complex projects in asset-intensive industries enabling me to build a robust toolset that I can leverage for the rest of my career.
Can you share an example of a time you made an impact on your clients, teams, or community that you are proud of?
I’m proud to be involved in closing the gap between strategy and operation to deliver tangible results that will impact people's lives every day and long into the future.
What's something that's surprised you with the work and your role?
It was not a goal of mine to work within the transport sector when I joined Deloitte - my focus was on building my strategy and business transformation capabilities in an organisation that was impact-focused. In my time at Deloitte, I have been consistently surprised by how rewarding it is to work with transport organisations, solving some of their most complex problems and seeing the flow on social impacts of change.
What type of activities keep you engaged in Deloitte's national transport sector community?
The fact that it is structured as a community brings a great focus to knowledge sharing and gives us the ability to hear about all the work going on nationally across the practice. Everyone in the community is very giving of their time and eager to talk about their experiences, which have accelerated my knowledge and led to better client outcomes.
Why would you encourage others to join Deloitte's transport sector team?
I would encourage all structured problems solvers to give it a go! The diversity of problems varies from customer to workforce planning, to engineering and infrastructure. There is just so much opportunity to accelerate your development and make such a positive social impact.
What makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and inspiring place for someone to work?
I have been able to work and learn from such a diverse group of individuals that are all focused on ensuring that our work translates to impact for our clients.

I am an active member of the National and Local Transport community and the Lead Client Service Director for a large state government transport organisation.
What transport projects have you worked on at Deloitte, and can you tell us about some of the skills or experiences you've gained?
In the last 12 months, I have worked on projects with major state government transport departments across Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales. In this time, I have learned a lot about the changing rail networks across Australia, and the many similar challenges they face.
Can you share an example of a time you made an impact on your clients, teams, or community that you are proud of?
Earlier this year we created a strategy for a large state government transport department, which led to a significant investment and a commitment to creating a new rail industry in regional Queensland.

How complex rail networks are, and the interconnectedness of the decisions impacting people, processes, and systems.

The transport community is always willing to invest their time and share their experiences to help achieve the best outcome for the client.

We also have such a wide range of projects to get involved in – from digital strategies to strategic operational planning, workforce planning to long-term industry development strategies.
How do you manage your work and personal life/interests using Deloitte Flex?
I use Deloitte flex to finish in time to do school pick up two days a week – it is great to be part of a team where you have this flexibility.

Rebecca and some of the Transport team at their end of year celebrations

Meet Chris
We caught up with Chris Lamm, a Senior Manager here at Deloitte and chatted about his experiences and highlights working within the transport team.
Before joining Deloitte, were you working in the transport sector?
Before Deloitte, I was worked at another Big 4 firm in the UK where I managed a Regional Priority Account program. That experience led me to seek out Deloitte upon my return to Australia.
What can you tell us about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?
I work across several accounts and industries. Core to my role is working with the Lead Client Service Partner for a major state government transport organisation, running the client service team and to drive and manage the varied account requirements. My projects range from working through the planning process for the accounts, undertaking client voice, reporting and implementing relationship programs to managing new business procurement across the firm for our clients.
Can you share an example of a time you made an impact on your clients, teams, or community that you are proud of?
I think it comes down to impact and being recognised by some of the hardest markers with the highest standards in industry and thanked by our Deloitte leaders when you know you have made a difference. For me, that has been on several new business proposals that have kept us very busy and project managing the process from scope to delivery.
What's something that's surprised you with the work and your role?
No day is the same. The dynamic nature of the clients and transport sector means that new work, new client requests, and new people keep the role fluid and ever-changing.
Why would you encourage others to join Deloitte’s transport sector team?
Transport touches everyone and almost everything around us. Being part of the future of transport is an exciting intersect. Plus, the team is multi-faceted crossing all business units and creating opportunities for a very varied and interesting workspace.
Why did you want to join Deloitte?
I think the global reach was key to joining Deloitte. Being able to span the globe and work across a sector and bring new thinking to the Australian market is exciting.
How does Deloitte build a safe and inclusive culture?
Deloitte sets a standard to be an employer of choice and I am lucky to have worked with client service teams that are packed full of people that lead through experience and example.
What has been your experience with Deloitte training, development, and learning programs?
There is something for everyone and learning from others in the firm has been great. Likewise I’ve really enjoyed Business Chemistry… which is all about using science to understand and improve the art of business relationships
How do you manage your work and personal life/interests using Deloitte Flex?
Deloitte Flex is an exciting and progressive step to giving some time to alter your workday start and finish times. I'm still a bit of a traditionalist for the 9-5, but more excitingly for me is the recently announced Placeflex. Placeflex is all about being able to expand my horizons and work across Australia and abroad with international teams and provide a work-life balance, as well as extra time to feel like one isn’t not rushing a holiday when things could be busy. I can’t wait to spend a few weeks in the London office at some time in the future doing my Sydney day job.
What makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and inspiring place for someone to work?
You will work with all types of people but above all are some great minds and a great culture. The firm thrives on collaboration and there is always something new to learn.

Meet Ann
We chatted to Ann Zhang, Senior Manager, as she discussed her perspectives, highlights, and proudest moments working within the transport team here at Deloitte.
What can you tell us about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?
In my role at Deloitte, I focus on Government and Public Services (GPS) clients in the Federal Government market in Canberra. During this time, I have delivered various projects involving the design and implementation of large-scale programs in cross-agency portfolio/program management and service delivery reform.
What's something that's surprised you with the work and your role?
The variety of impact you and your teams can make through client project delivery regardless of which GPS sector you work in. As well as the amount of learning and experience you will accumulate through working across government agencies and the transferrable skills in your areas of passion.
What type of activities keep you engaged in Deloitte's national transport sector community?
Sector-focused planning and communications, as they bring team members together in a community at a national level, as well as Deloitte perspectives on the most eminent client conversation topics of the day.
Why did you want to join Deloitte?
Deloitte provides the opportunity to work on some of the nation's most complex programs related to translating public policy into a program for implementation. I also really value the growth and support structure we have established in place that is refined periodically for your career development, as well as the opportunity to learn from experienced senior leaders.
How does Deloitte build a safe and inclusive culture? Are there any examples or leadership behaviours that you can share?
Inclusive leadership and career coaching- I am very grateful for the time and investments that were made in me, the recognition of my cultural diversity, and being coached to learn from those who have been in my shoes and want to see me grow.
What has been your experience with Deloitte training, development, and learning programs?
I was fortunate enough to be part of the ‘Inspiring Women’ program in 2018, which connects you to a network of talented women across the firm. It was great to have the opportunity to get to know others and form relationships across the firm's breadth and learn common issues and challenges we could navigate together.

Meet Rohan
Rohan Fernando, Manager in the transport team, shared highlights from his career journey at Deloitte, and why he loves being a part of the transport community.
What can you tell us about your role at Deloitte and the work you're involved in?
I am a Program Manager in the Deloitte team assigned to work with Federal Government departments to undertake transformative programs of work.
I am currently working with a large Federal Government department to enact new legislation for a modern regulatory framework for the importation and first provision of road vehicles in Australia. The new regulatory framework will fundamentally transform the way the department interacts with and regulates industry participants. This framework is expected to oversee importations and certification of over one million vehicles into Australia each year.
What transport projects have you worked on at Deloitte, and can you tell us about some of the skills or experiences you've gained?
Since joining Deloitte in March 2021, I have worked with a government department on a program to implement a new modern regulation framework based on the Road Vehicles Standards Act 2018 (RVSA).
This program is aiming to deliver a robust and clear framework, which takes a holistic view of the standards and considers the entire compliance lifecycle of road vehicles and industry players, to provide confidence to the industry and the community.
By working with Deloitte, I have increased my knowledge and understanding of:
- Driving detailed sprint planning and prioritising activities with program teams to deliver IT platform release
- Monitoring and reporting on program transition and readiness activities
- Supporting post go-live activities for releases
What's something that's surprised you with the work and your role?
Given the importance of this transformative program within the department, I meet weekly with the executive to provide status reports and talk about risks and issues. Deloitte is providing me with coaching and training to improve my consultant skills so I can successfully provide advice and expertise to executives, challenge their perspectives, and help them succeed in implementing a better transformative program. Before joining Deloitte, I did not expect that I would receive training on how to deal with executives. I am now receiving coaching on top-down thinking and structured problem solving so that I can become a better consultant. This has been a welcome unforeseen benefit of joining Deloitte.
Why would you encourage others to join Deloitte’s transport sector team?
The Deloitte transport team has been very successful. By joining this team, you will learn how to undertake transformative programs and use the right approach, you will be surrounded by exceptional colleagues, and be supported by experienced and exceptional directors and connected partners. Learning and using the best practices for implementing programs will help your career now and into the future.
What makes Deloitte a great, rewarding, and inspiring place for someone to work?
At Deloitte, you are given access to an enormous and varied amount of training and coaching to help you succeed. You are assigned a project coach and a development coach to help you set and achieve goals that benefit you and the organisation. Deloitte has a safe and inclusive culture; every staff member is treated well and with respect.
