Deloitte and Buk Bilong Pikinini’s WorldClass mission

Teaching the children of Papua New Guinea to read and write their way to a better future

The challenge of low literacy levels is close to the hearts of the people of Deloitte Papua New Guinea. Since 2015, we have been working with the charity Buk bilong Pikinini, providing books, kindles, computers and pro bono support to give schoolchildren a fighting chance in a young nation challenged by high levels of poverty and crime.

In March, 2019 we took our commitment to a new level with a $A50k donation that will enable Buk bilong Pikinini to repair and run the busy Koki Markets Library and Learning Centre for one year. It will also provide funding for library kits for ten local schools in Papua New Guinea.

We supplemented our financial donation with a national device drive in which our people donated their pre-loved educational devices, including kindles and laptops for the children of Papua New Guinea.

This work is part of our global WorldClass commitment to help 50 million futures by 2030. Our aim? To link people with opportunities to find meaningful work in the future. The case for action is compelling:

  • 758 million adults are illiterate
  • 198 million people are unemployed
  • 59 million children are out of school
  • 825 million people will lack basic secondary skills by 2030.

Across the landscape of Papua New Guinea, Deloitte’s efforts are helping many schoolchildren every day to read and write their way to a better future. Watch the video below to find out how.
