Financial Statement Series
Session 1: Understanding Financial Statements
This session provides participants with an overview of the fundamental accounting principles that form the basis of the preparation of financial reports. Participants will learn about the key components and formats of financial reports. The session also provides participants with an opportunity to practice their financial analysis skills through a review of the financial statements of actual companies.
Session 2: Financial Statement Error and Manipulation
This session explores the motivation for financial statement manipulation and through the use of case studies the common areas that are susceptible to potential manipulation. This presentation will better equip you, as lawyers, to understand, interpret and critique the information contained in financial statements.
This session assumes that participants has a basic understanding of accounting concepts and financial statements (for example, having attended Session 1 in this series)

The content of this session is tailored for your particular needs. However, may cover such material as:
Financial Statement Fraud and Error, and the role of the Auditor
In this presentation we examine, through the use of worked examples, common financial accounting issues that arise in the context of fraud, corporate collapses and error. This presentation will better equip you, as lawyers, to understand, interpret and critique the information contained in financial statements.
In addition, we consider how audit committees, the audit profession and regulatory bodies are responding to these issues and others created by the current economic environment. This presentation will be delivered by accounting and auditing experts from the Deloitte Forensic and Deloitte Audit teams.
Business and share valuation concepts in contentious matters
This session provides participants with an overview of some key valuation concepts and methodologies used in contentious matters. This session deals with the concept of value, an overview of valuation techniques, key considerations and areas of subjectivity. The presentation also highlights common areas of manipulation.
Conducting effective financial investigations
This session provides participants with an overview of the common types of workplace misconduct, including the risks associated with them and their potential cost. Participants are then taken through an indicative investigation, including planning; the scope and reporting. This session also includes how forensic technology is used to assist with investigations.
Loss of profit calculation case studies
This session provides participants with an overview of the methodology for quantifying a ‘loss of profit’ claim and then builds upon that theoretical knowledge through the discussion of case studies. This session will provide participants an insight into the issues that are considered within a loss of profit calculation, the documents that are required and some of the nuances that arise.
Sale and purchase agreement disputes
This session examines common financial disputes that arise in the context of sale and purchase transactions. Participants will be provided with an overview of the following:
Forensic technology – electronic discovery
This session provides participants with an overview of the current and future states of electronic discovery. Participants are guided through the end to end process for electronic discovery beginning with data identification and collection, touching on aspects of data processing and culminating in document review and litigation discovery productions.
Forensic technology – computer forensic
This session provides participants with an overview of core forensic principles and methodologies and how they relate to electronic evidence. Participants are taken through a variety of electronic data sources and provided with an insight into the types of information that can be obtained from these different sources. Emphasis is placed on specific device type limitations such that an awareness of best practice preservation techniques is understood and can be adhered to.
