Helping skilled refugees build careers in Austria's financial sector

The Deloitte Finance and Accounting School provides refugees with the local accounting and language skills needed for jobs in the Austrian financial sector.
Between 2015 and 2017, approximately 155,000 refugees sought asylum in Austria. Deloitte Austria has committed to supporting their wellbeing through professional training and skills development. A key focus area is to help those that are highly skilled to find work by providing training to adapt their previous qualifications to the Austrian job market.
In cooperation with Raiffeisen Bank International, Deloitte Austria established the Finance and Accounting School to support refugees who are struggling to apply their accounting backgrounds to jobs in Austria. Accountants who have college degrees and professional experience attend the school to develop knowledge of the Austrian accounting system.
The school offers a nine-month program that educates refugees in finance and accounting, and also offers German-language courses. The multidisciplinary program prepares refugees for the job market.
In 2017, 15 refugees participated in the program, receiving official certification of their accounting and language skills upon successful completion. Deloitte Austria offered internships to the graduates, one joined the firm full-time.
South Africa
Deloitte helps propel people with disabilities to new heights in the workforce

An experiential learning program is giving people with disabilities in South Africa the workplace skills and expertise needed to build a career.
Deloitte South Africa has committed to supporting people with disabilities to develop the skills and experience needed to find meaningful work. Deloitte partnered with a South African education institution that focuses on providing learning and training for the health care industry.
In September 2017, Deloitte funded places for 89 people with disabilities to participate in a one-year, accredited program. The program is designed to prepare individuals with an entry-level professional qualification and work experience. It offers participants formal classroom-based learning, work experience, and mentors. Most of the participants gained work experience in administration positions at South African hospitals. This program is also Deloitte South Africa's contribution toward assisting the public sector.
At the end of the program, participants should have the knowledge, training and skills to find future employment opportunities, whether with their host organizations or the broader business community. Participants have reported that, along with being grateful for the opportunity to improve their skills, they feel highly motivated, excited to be a part of the program, and eager to obtain their qualifications.
France
Building careers for disadvantaged girls

The Capital Filles program encourages high school girls to pursue higher education, particularly in male-dominated fields.
Girls in France often outperform boys in school, but they are less likely pursue to continue their learning with higher education. This is especially prevalent in traditionally male-dominated courses of study, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). To help address this, Deloitte France works at both the national and local levels to support girls to finish secondary schooling, and explore career paths in STEM.
Through a pro bono study delivered for the Ministry of Education, Deloitte demonstrated the long-term impact of mentoring on high school-age girls. Since 2014, Deloitte France has applied this knowledge to develop a mentoring program for girls in public secondary schools with high drop-out rates.
The program, Capital Filles, builds students' confidence, and helps them develop job skills and explore career opportunities. Deloitte France works with public high schools and other companies to deliver the three-year mentoring program. Capital Filles features soft-skills workshops and one-on-one mentoring, and encourages girls to pursue apprenticeships and additional education.
One student, Hawa, explained: "My mentor helped me on a professional and personal level, which enabled me to believe in my abilities."
More than 9,500 girls have participated. Among the 2015-16 program participants, 94 percent passed their course of study, and 92 percent continued to higher education. Four out of five reported that their relationships with their mentors helped them mature.

Safe Schools program empowers educators and transforms lives

Safe Schools addresses violence and other challenges to at-risk students' educational development through leadership training and coaching.
Deloitte people in Trinidad and Tobago are helping students to overcome the complex challenges they face in school, from violence and bullying, to student disengagement. Deloitte recognized that overcoming these challenges required solutions that respond directly to student needs, while inspiring hope and confidence.
The program, piloted in a high school in January 2017, is designed and managed by Deloitte Caribbean and Bermuda Countries and includes corporate financial sponsorship from Republic Bank Limited. Working with the school, Deloitte created a phased approach focused on providing school leaders, teachers and adults in the community with the tools and knowledge they need to recognize and manage hostile situations, champion change, foster inclusivity, and motivate colleagues. Through Safe Schools, teachers participated in Deloitte University's Leadership Center for Community Impact's Courageous Principals Program. They also received hands-on training and coaching, and attended workshops to further develop their skills.
Safe Schools has driven a belief among stakeholders that change is possible, and renewed pride among teachers and students as well as the local community. Ravi Rampersad, a senior manager for Deloitte Consulting in Trinidad and Tobago, said, "As a community member and a father, I feel strongly about this groundbreaking project, and seeing young people achieve their potential and society prosper."
Deloitte in Trinidad and Tobago is committed to the project's ongoing success and continues to engage schools in the local community.
Uruguay
Educating and training socially vulnerable students for future work

ÁNIMA prepares vulnerable youth for a technology-driven marketplace through education, job experience, and mentoring.
Many vulnerable youth in Uruguay fail to complete secondary education or gain quality jobs, particularly in today's digital marketplace. Overall, youth unemployment is approximately 25 percent and companies struggle to hire qualified entry-level employees.
To address this problem, Deloitte Uruguay co-founded ÁNIMA. ÁNIMA is an educational institution providing vulnerable students with a tuition-free education that leads to a technological baccalaureate in administration and information and communication technology. ÁNIMA combines classroom study with on-the-job experience — the first model of its kind in Uruguay.
Deloitte Uruguay serves as an ÁNIMA board member, funds programs and other initiatives, and engages its professionals to participate as teachers, trainers, and volunteers. More than 100 Deloitte professionals have mentored students during their first year of study. Of the students participating 96 percent would recommend the experience.
As a founding member of ÁNIMA, Deloitte Uruguay is committed to continuing efforts to build positive futures for more young people in the country.

Game Plan prepares Canadian athletes for success beyond sport

Game Plan supports Olympic, Paralympic and national team athletes in living better lives, both during their high performance careers and beyond.
Deloitte Canada's total-athlete wellness program, Game Plan, takes a holistic approach in preparing athletes for life after their peak performance days have come to an end. Through the development of skills and networks, athletes are able to focus on health, education, and career opportunities during their high-performance careers and beyond. Services include: skill development workshops, tuition reimbursement programs, mental health support, career counselling, networking and employment opportunities.
Deloitte offers job-shadow opportunities for interested athletes, and has played an integral part in encouraging its clients to join the Game Plan Employer Network, a group of companies willing to accommodate athletes with part-time, internship, or flexible work opportunities. More than 3,000 athletes have benefitted from the program so far.
When asked about the impact Game Plan is having on their lives, one athlete said, "[Game Plan] is bridging a scary gap for athletes as they start to consider the next stage of life. Providing these opportunities allows us to be more prepared, more confident, and more excited about what other opportunities are beyond the life of an athlete."
Game Plan was founded in 2015—powered by Deloitte, with the support of the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Sport Canada, and the Canadian Olympic Paralympic Sport Institute Network—to provide the best resources Canada has to offer to its national team athletes. Other partners include Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), and Morneau Shepell, and the Smith School of Business at Queen's University.
South Korea
Building a better life for girls in South Korea

Deloitte Korea is bringing hope and renewed confidence to girls' in a South Korean girls detention center.
For students living at the Jungsim Girls Information Industry School, a detention center for girls in Anyang, South Korea, life can be isolated and often without hope. These girls face the burden of minimal education, low self-esteem, and poor social skills.
In 2013 Deloitte Korea recognized the opportunity to improve the students' situations and started a mentoring program to prepare the girls for life after their release. Deloitte Korea professionals teach a two hour class each week focusing on topics such as financial planning and credit management. Deloitte mentors focus on empowering students for life after their release.
Since becoming mentors five years ago, Deloitte Korea professionals have improved the lives and futures of more than 5,100 girls. Jung Hwan Kim is among the 170 Deloitte Korea professionals that have taught at the school and been recognized by their students. She said: "I thought only people from healthy environments could work at a good company. Thanks to the Deloitte teachers, I've gained confidence and have a dream of working at a company like Deloitte, so I'll study hard to attain my goal."

Teaching young people in the Netherlands to be money smart

The National Money Exam educates young people on how to make smart money decisions so they can become financially responsible adults.
Technology-driven transactions have made money less tangible, for both adults and children.
Recognizing the need for far-reaching education to ensure that primary school children today gain financial knowledge they can use in the future, Deloitte Netherlands initiated the National Money Exam. The program was developed with the National Institute for Family Finance Information (Nibud) and education publisher Zwijsen. It teaches 11- and 12-year-olds how to become money smart and is the only curriculum in the Netherlands focused on the financial behavior of young people.
Deloitte Netherlands administers the program in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and other large municipalities. The program is held throughout the Netherlands during an annual Global Money Week. Approximately 150 Deloitte people serve as "money coaches" for students. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Money Exam Certificate.
The National Money Exam is included in the curriculum of approximately 750 primary schools, reaching over 35,000 students each year. In 2017, the Rotterdam’s mayor awarded 500 certificates to children who completed the program, saying "It is important that this national exam is introduced in this way and children are aware of the value of money, and what they can and cannot do with it."
