Life at Deloitte
Deloitte Tax Analytics
Paving the path to the future
Solving problems and pushing herself beyond her comfort zone are what drive Adrienne Jamail. She's a mechanical engineer by training and spent the beginning of her professional life working in product development for a global automobile manufacturer. "I didn't know much about Deloitte back then and never expected I would work for a professional services organization," says Adrienne, "but a former college roommate was working at Deloitte and told me the Detroit tax practice was hiring, and not just accountants." People with a broad range of technical and industry backgrounds were in demand, in particular, someone with automotive experience. Adrienne interviewed and 12 years ago brought her passion for solving problems to Deloitte's Detroit R&D Tax Credit team.
Her decision has been a win-win-win for her, Deloitte, and their clients. "I can talk to automotive engineers. I've been in their shoes," says Adrienne, who is now a senior manager, "and that helps when we're listening to and gathering information from an automotive industry client's engineering department." Better information can lead to better understanding of a client's business and ultimately better solutions. Adrienne’s engineering background has been an asset on a number of projects and opened doors for her too.
Leaders who advocated for and invested in her and pushed her further than she’d gone before boosted Adrienne's confidence and, after 10 years in R&D Tax Credits, took her career in a new direction. Tax Analytics was launching the Tax POV service offering, and Adrienne stepped in to work on the nationwide rollout. This wasn't her first retool or the first time she had been pushed outside her comfort zone. "I’m most excited in situations where I’m uncomfortable," says Adrienne, "where I don't have all the answers, and I'm solving a new kind of problem."
Adrienne took on the new job in data analytics, and in less than one year, relocated to a new city, in the middle of her job transition, welcomed her second child, and went on maternity leave. The Tax POV development project was an excellent training ground, and a year later, Adrienne landed a spot in a new service line, Tax Analytics Insights. "This was a chance to start something totally new, and that is what I am passionate about," says Adrienne. One-on-one with clients, she works to understand their business, tax positions, issues, and data, and applies tax analytics to develop customized solutions that fit each client's scenario and specific needs. "I wake up every morning excited about what I do—traveling to Deloitte offices, meeting our leaders, presenting to clients, problem solving," says Adrienne." Every day is an amazing experience."
People often ask her why she joined Deloitte and what keeps her here, and Adrienne always gives the same three reasons. First is the people—the leaders, mentors, and supporters who have invested in her success and the amazing people she's worked with in her various roles. Her second reason is that Deloitte gives back what she puts in, and Adrienne finds being appreciated and rewarded for her work highly motivating. A chance to craft her own career path is Adrienne's third reason. Deloitte has so much to offer, and she loves the opportunity to make her career what she wants it to be. Her passion and strong skillset for problem solving have allowed her to be part of something new, and that's Tax Analytics. "The chance to start a new group and bring clients tools, technologies, and solutions they haven't seen before—that kind of opportunity doesn't come along every day," concludes Adrienne. "I never know what tomorrow might bring, and for me that's exciting. That’s where I’m happiest."
