The atmosphere at the start of our final ride today was electric, despite some of us starting to suffer from sore muscles and/or other ramifications of six consecutive days on our bikes. We were looking forward with great excitement to what was ahead of us, the Col du Tourmalet. This fellow is 18.3 km long and bridges 1,401 vertical metres with an average gradient of 7.7%. The top of the ascent is located at 2,115 metres above sea level. Not really comparable with anything we had cycled so far this week.
We rode together to the start of the climb and then everyone found her/his own pace to conquer the Tourmalet. While some took a bit longer than others, we all made it to the top! Apart for the ones arriving first, of course, we made sure there were at least a handful of colleagues cheering on those reaching the top, which made it a fantastic experience for all of us.
Tourmalet was the climax of this great week which had to be celebrated urgently on a sunny terrace in the valley in good company with a good meal and Belgian beer. And that is exactly what a group of us did, while the others continued their journey for a second and equally epic climb, the Col d’Aspin. About half of the group went the extra +500th mile by climbing the Hourquette, with some extremely steep segments. Tons of respect!
We celebrated the conclusion of a wonderful week with a very tasty and deserved “steak frites”. Happy. Fulfilled. Proud. Grateful. Blessed.
Thanks to all the participating partners, Team Kortweg, and the partners who organised the trip, Jurgen Foré and Rolf Driesen.
And a special thanks to everyone who mentally supported us during (and before!) our journey and who contributed to the good causes. We will communicate shortly where we landed…
