Resilience and agility steer Best Managed Companies through economically challenging times

For the first time in Belgium six companies obtain the Gold label

Brussels - 7 May 2021

In its fourth year, the Best Managed Companies programme recognises private companies for their business success. Participants in the programme are evaluated against a proven global framework: a clear long term strategy, extensive capabilities, strong commitment, and excellent financial performance. This year 24 Belgian private companies have been selected by the independent jury of which six companies now bear the Gold label— CE+T Group, EASI, E.D.&A., LVD Group, Vanbreda Risk & Benefits, and Vandersanden Group. The Gold label rewards the Best Managed Companies that have successfully retained the recognition for four consecutive years.

Bruno Peelaers, Best Managed Companies Programme Director: “After a challenging year for many businesses, it feels more important than ever to acknowledge the leadership these private companies embody. It requires resilience and agility. These are precisely values that the Best Managed Companies programme rewards, supports and stimulates. Best Managed Companies demonstrate a great ability to manage opportunities and threats, an optimistic and clear vision of the future, as well as a strong commitment to a sustainable strategy. These assets allow them to embrace the world of tomorrow and capitalise on their strengths. Through the programme, we intend to help companies grow stronger and support economic growth in the country.”

Since 2018 Deloitte Private and Econopolis, joined by KU Leuven in 2019, have been searching for excellence in business performance in the Belgian entrepreneurial landscape. Throughout the application process of the programme the companies are accompanied by a Deloitte Private Best Managed Companies coach. The coaches challenge strategy, operational and financial processes against the international Best Managed Companies framework. Once enrolled in the programme, companies can continue to participate in the process year after year. The programme continues its expansion this year by recognising companies that have successfully retained the Best Managed Companies label for four consecutive years.

Nikolaas Tahon, Chairman Deloitte Belgium and Best Managed Companies Lead: “Every year we are surprised by the openness and willingness of these entrepreneurs to engage in a discussion about their strengths and challenges. In times of the global pandemic we see the agility with which these companies adapt to unforeseen circumstances and turn their challenges into a competitive advantage.”

The independent jury rigorously evaluates the participants’ management capability and practices against the proven global Best Managed Companies framework criteria. The external jury is led by Françoise Chombar, CEO Melexis, supported by five academic and entrepreneurial members: Koenraad Debackere, Professor KU Leuven and Chairman KBC Group, Geert Noels, CEO and Chief Economist Econopolis, Rik Jacob, former CEO Ardo, Rik Vera, Chairman and founding partner Nexxworks, and Yves Noël, former CEO NMC.

About Best Managed Companies

In 2017 Deloitte Private launched Belgium Best Managed Companies in collaboration with Econopolis, joined by KU Leuven in 2019. The programme aims to provide guidance and recognition for Belgian privately owned and managed companies that achieve excellent results.

The globally proven framework is used to assess their leadership qualities and practices in the areas of strategy, capabilities, commitment, and financial performance. Companies wishing to participate in the programme must have a turnover exceeding €10 million. They must have been established for at least five years, with more than 25 full-time employees and a majority stake (> 60%) owned by a Belgian resident, person or entity. The company’s HQ or a major decision centre must be located in Belgium and they must be fully compliant from a legal, tax and ethical perspective.

The Best Managed Companies label is intended to become an international label denoting quality and excellence. The programme was developed 28 years ago in Canada and has been rolled out in the meantime over 35 countries worldwide.
