Shaping the digital future
Industrial digital transformation with 5G
The world’s economy is at another pivotal moment and a key catalyst for growth is wireless connectivity enabled by 5G networks. That is one of the reasons why we are proud to have empowered the 5G revolution by taking a leading role in developing the first European 5G standalone industrial testbed.
This testbed network was deployed in the Port of Antwerp which is a major economic engine for Belgium and Northern Europe. It is also where several of the largest chemical and logistics players have their operations.
Getting ahead of the curve
In comparison to 4G, 5G's new standards for enterprise will open the floodgates to a host of previously infeasible applications, allowing for industrial-scale Internet of Things networks in factories, warehouses, ports, cities, and more.
In short, 5G is improving 4G’s performance by a factor of ~10. It can be considered as reliable as a wired network, but without the wires. Key 5G features:
- Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB): Transmits data incredibly fast, at speeds of up to 20 Gbps (a rate previously only available through fibre)
- Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC): Connects every device (camera, sensor, vehicle, etc.) at low latency with reliability levels equivalent to those of a wired connection
- Massive machine type communications (mMTC): Supports extremely high connection densities, up to a million IoT sensors and devices per square kilometre
Innovating with 5G
Talk about 5G often includes “could”, “would”, and “should”, this story highlights how we “did”. Deloitte brought together the best skills and expertise of its 5G Centre of Excellence with top professionals from the Port community, and built a trustworthy ecosystem for clients and government to pilot real 5G use cases while sharing and learning from each other’s experiences.
Connected machines, vessels, workers, augmented reality, etc. are some examples of proof of concepts developed within this project. In this context, Deloitte applied its holistic and end-to-end expertise to imagine and deliver real-life proof of concept solutions enabled by a cutting edge communication technology. From imagining and ideating the use cases, to developing and implementing real-world applications to experiment and measure 5G’s technical capabilities.
This unique initiative proved 5G’s value potential for industrial digital transformations. It steered business decision-making enabled by technology toward a connected, digital, and 5G-enabled future.
