Digital transformation brings many improvements to patients and the healthcare industry. Primarily driven by greater data connectivity, interoperable and open but secure platforms allow for increased patient engagement across the industry. However, increased pressure to keep healthcare spending and social security mechanisms affordable for all patients triggers hospitals to focus on the right care, efficient treatments with better outcomes, and lean processes.
“Today’s business climate is characterised by disruption and volatility. At Deloitte, we help businesses gain a new view of risk—seeing risk management as a vital performance lever, revealing untapped opportunities to create competitive advantage.”
Together with a group of leading hospitals in Belgium including the Universitair Ziekenhuis Antwerpen (UZA), Deloitte discussed today’s challenges and the current decision models and practices within the hospital environment, also sharing best practices and industry insights.
Our model for integrated risk management allows hospital management as well as care teams to make sound decisions in their efforts to balance cost efficiency with quality and compliance. The key drivers are well-thought risk evaluations and management decisions that facilitate the discussion not only in the management team but also in the board.
“We developed a risk management model that combines risk-based principles to improve process quality, increase the overall performance of hospital activities, and push innovation as a catalyst for quality of care – each one allowing for more efficient management decisions.”
This initiative has been the trigger for several hospitals to set-up their very own internal working groups, in which they discuss risks and challenges but more importantly, how to manage and come to conclusions. “Within UZA I expect integrated risk management to become an important driver in better identifying and also integrating different improvement initiatives,” says Ilse Schepens, Audit Manager from Antwerp University Hospital.
With an industry where risk management focused traditionally on compliance, Deloitte has opened the debate to use risk management as an answer to prepare ourselves for the future.
