Conduct risk in the insurance sector

Conduct and mis-selling are areas of intense scrutiny for regulators, investors and consumers. When it comes to conduct, all organisations are now under the spotlight. A company’s brand and public perception are all front and centre stage – with no room for anything to fly under the reputation radar.

Culture, conduct, and compliance represent three interrelated dimensions that intersect to create fair outcomes for customers and help protect market integrity. Conduct is a lens into the culture of the organization. Conduct failings have materialized across several jurisdictions, cut across the organisations, and can be linked to workplace misconduct, poor sales practices/mis-selling, and market misconduct.

Conduct is when an organization’s behaviors and practices deliver fair and suitable outcomes for customers, employees, suppliers, and markets.

– The Deloitte perspective

Years after the global financial crisis, the regulatory focus on conduct continues to persist and firms continue to face regulatory pressure to have the necessary frameworks in place to manage conduct and culture.

EIOPA has published in February 2019 a framework for assessing conduct risk. The purpose of the framework is to clarify drivers of conduct risk and their implications in the emergence of consumer detriment. It provides an aid for understanding issues faced by consumers and input on the types of conduct risks EIOPA and the national competent authorities (NCAs) should focus on.During our interactive breakfast seminar we will zoom in on EIOPA’s conduct risk framework and the key drivers of conduct risk. Dimitri Van Eenoo, Head of Compliance at AG Insurance has accepted to provide an inside perspective of how conduct risk is being managed at AG. And lastly, we will demonstrate a case study of how advanced analytics and machine learning can help generate the management information and intelligence needed to detect and monitor conduct risk.
