Terumo successfully moves to the cloud

In May 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, Deloitte together with Terumo successfully created a two-tier ERP infrastructure leveraging the SAP® Preferred Success plan for SAP S/4HANA Cloud to optimise the management of Terumo’s operations across EMEA.

Best-practice go-live

On a journey to digitalise its business, Terumo Europe and Terumo Aortic, wanted to support innovation requirements at key subsidiaries in EMEA while preserving its business software at its head office. To meet the firm’s technological, financial, and logistics requirements, Terumo sought expert support from Deloitte to speed up the rollout of cloud technologies, integrating simultaneously into head office legacy environment.

With multiple sales affiliates (Germany, Italy, France, Russia), it was hard for Terumo to coordinate new customer experiences, meet all legal local compliance requirements, standardise operational processes according to best practices, integrate agile methods, and embed analytics.

With the Terumo team , already experienced in traditional SAP implementation, stepping into the cloud was not an easy decision. Working together with Deloitte, the go-live of the SAP S/4HANA Cloud solution was achieved rapidly, even during COVID-19 crisis.

Terumo was able to deploy SAP S/4HANA Cloud Essentials at its subsidiaries and take advantage of innovative technologies and embedded analytics capabilities while connecting to existing on-premise systems, allowing intercompany scenarios through a two-tier landscape. Proactive risk mitigation was enabled through strategic collaboration and joined governance.

The novel two-tier ERP solution developed for Terumo has enabled the organisation to standardise its business operations across EMEA. Smaller, more manageable applications that are fit for purpose can now be changed at scale within total cost of ownership guardrails.

Responding to the needs of healthcare providers and the people they serve, Terumo produces, distributes, markets, and sells a vast range of medical devices across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Partnership with Deloitte

Although the project implementation was challenging considering the business maturity, timing, many stakeholders, and the novelty of the solution, we are now enjoying a robust lightweight ERP solution, which is contributing to sustainable and profitable growth in the EMEA region, having implemented an agile integrated platform at acceptable total cost of ownership (TCO) to remain competitive in the life sciences, medical device market.Sigurd Segers, EMEA Director Applications, Enterprise Architecture & Analytics
