Name: Heldar Carreiro

Current Position: Partner

Department: Audit – Insurance

College Attended: Queens University

Degree Completed: Bachelor of Commerce (honours)

Date that you joined Deloitte: September 2005

Partner, Audit & Assurance

What do you like most about your role?
The ability to do more than audit work. During my time here are Deloitte I have been able to work on multiple Advisory projects and had the opportunity to lead internal projects such as the Audit Associate Program - a training program that supports recent graduates studying towards their accounting designations.

What attracted you to Deloitte?
The people! During my first summer internship I had the opportunity of meeting several professional staff that had a genuine interest in my career. All were more than happy to sit down and chat about the Chartered Professional Accountant designation and the life of an auditor.

What are you responsible for in your role?
As audit partner I am responsible for the signing of audit reports over client’s financial statements and directing the audit team throughout the performance of the audit.  As a leader in the firm I am responsible creating an inclusive and dynamic work environment along with setting the right tone at the top.

What’s a typical day like for you?
My day typically starts by catching up with my teams, followed by a wide variety of meetings and ending with reviewing audit engagement working papers.

What else have your been involved with since joining Deloitte?
Through leading the Audit Associate Program I have been able to continue to develop an important Deloitte initiative that supports and develops local Bermudians working towards their accounting qualification. I’ve also had the opportunity to perform internal practice reviews throughout the Caribbean and Bermuda Countries (CBC) and for other Deloitte Member Firms and recently been appointed as the Practice Review Director for the CBC responsible for planning, coordinating and reporting practice review results to Deloitte Global.

What is Deloitte’s role in your longer term career goals?
Deloitte is a facilitator to my longer term career goals.

What have you enjoyed most?
I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to work in and learn from diverse teams which include subject matter experts and individuals from all over the world.

How are you supported to work flexibly?
Deloitte is results focused.  When you combined this with a strong team environment and open communications there is little to no attention paid to when and where you are working as everyone knows that most individuals are all working towards the common goal. And those individuals are rewarded and succeeding at Deloitte or whichever pass they chose. Deloitte also has various programs in place that improve the overall Talent experience. For example, the Working Parents transition program provides additional leave and resource support for parents at child’s birth and beyond.

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?
I think this must be my admission into the partnership in July 2019 as becoming an audit partner was my goal even before being a Deloitte intern in 2003.  However, each years’ internal champagne toasts and CPA convocation for Bermudians that have completed their long journey of becoming qualifies accountants is just as memorable!
