Life at Deloitte
Jessica Mello, Bermuda
"I find it extremely satisfying to have a meaningful and positive impact on the future of the country which is my home."
What do you like most about your role?
Most of the client projects we work on make a real impact on Bermuda or another CBC country. We impact government public policy decisions, or corporate strategy, and we often work on initiatives that make headlines in the local news (usually without our Brand or names being mentioned). Most of our work is deeply interesting and challenging. We do a variety of work across services and industries so we are constantly learning. We work together as a team, which I find very energizing and exciting. I love consulting as it is never mundane or routine.
What attracted you to Deloitte?
Deloitte has an excellent global reputation in Consulting, but there was no local Consulting practice in Bermuda when I arrived, so I have been able to build a practice from scratch locally, with the best possible global team behind me. It was a far more exciting opportunity for me than joining a mature consulting practice. I was able to apply what I’d learned in my previous consulting practice in London to this new challenge.
Describe your day to day role
As I write, I am working from an airport between flights, on my way to a Human Capital Consulting training and leadership meeting in Mexico City. I’ll be there for two days. In the meantime, we are working on an engagement for a Public Sector client – an infrastructure development project – and I am reviewing the draft report and sending notes back to my team who are in Bermuda, London and Dubai. I’m also responding to two email requests for new opportunities which we are pursuing – one at a Bermuda Bank, one in another Caribbean country.
What else have your been involved with since joining Deloitte?
I am very involved in the local community, which is hugely important to me. For example, I’m on the board of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, and the Economics Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Deloitte is very supportive of my community work, and I encourage my team to do the same and make an impact in an area they’re passionate about in the community.
What is Deloitte’s role in your longer term career goals?
My goal is to develop a sustainable consulting practice in the local market and across the CBC. I take a long view on this, and I expect I will be developing the practice and our team for a number of years to come!
What have you enjoyed most?
I find it extremely satisfying to have a meaningful and positive impact on the future of the country which is my home. The work we do is very concrete and I love that even my young children can understand what we do!
