Life at Deloitte

Perspectives from our people
"The mobility program is an excellent idea, it allows you to travel beyond your country gaining experience and knowledge that you can take home."

Audit Senior Shane Bend tells us why he joined Deloitte in Bermuda

Shane takes a moment to share his experiences and perspectives

Why did you decide to go on a mobility assignment?

I simply wanted a change, it was to move from what was known to explore the unknown! This included cultures, people, places, and Deloitte.

Why did you choose Bermuda?

Bermuda is small but internationally known for its financial services sector (reinsurance), where this experience will definitely improve my professional standing with a greater understanding in financial services.

What is the mobility program like? How did you find the transition and support provided?

The mobility program is an excellent idea, it allows you to travel beyond your country gaining experience and knowledge that you can take home. I never felt out of the loop, always informed, and supported by the Talent team in Bermuda. The training provided was very effective and relevant. The two-week period for accommodation searching is sufficient but passes by quickly, I’d suggest start looking from day one or come a few days before your start date. The Talent team understand that you are in a foreign country and really ensure they help you settle in comfortably.

What are the main differences between working in Bermuda and Barbados?

In Bermuda I get to work in less than 10 mins, and there is no traffic! The Bermuda office has taken the time to streamline key working papers so that the process is uniform for similar engagements (after tailoring to your engagement), and this proves to be very efficient and effective. These materials have been reviewed and approved by the firm as a whole, and are expected to be used.

Describe what it is like living in Bermuda so far?

I like it! There are plenty things to do here, if you are interested! And everything is so close by. Because of the demographic you will not be alone, you will find persons from your country or persons that are into the same things you are.

Favorite moment to date?

One of favorite memories is probably renting a boat with friends and just touring the island…music…food…sun…sea…beautiful island. In addition to those mentioned, we have weekly Softball games, Cricket is starting soon, and weekly Friday unofficial after-work socials.

Worst moment to date?

Falling from my bike… nothing more to say on that!
