Long-term outcome to support better accounting education and the quality of financial reporting and auditing

Frankfurt, 13 February 2013 Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (Deloitte) and the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) today announced the Deloitte IAAER Scholarship Program, naming five associate professors from Brazil, Indonesia, Poland, Romania, and South Africa as the program's inaugural scholars. The announcement was made on the eve of the Accounting Research: Diversity within Unity  conference, of which IAAER is a co-sponsor.

In announcing the program, Charles P. Heeter, Managing Director, Deloitte Public Policy Group said, "This program aims to bring a broader perspective to local accounting education which will benefit future accounting professionals that go on to become auditors, preparers of  financial statements, budget holders, or financial controllers, just to name a few.

"It provides the link between 'local' and 'global' accounting developments, reflecting the global progression of the profession, and business in general. In the long term it will help raise the quality of accounting, auditing, and financial reporting in markets around the world."

Joining the announcement, Professor Donna L. Street, Mahrt Chair in Accounting, University of Dayton (USA) and IAAER Director of Research and Education Activities said, "Expanding experiences and access to best practices, as well as providing a peer network and mentors to support professors across our universities, provides a much needed development opportunity for our emerging scholars and an ongoing support network that connects them to new international developments."

The Deloitte IAAER scholars include:

  • Nadia Albu, Associate Professor, Department of Accounting, Auditing and Business Analysis, Bucharest University of Economic Studies (ASE), Romania
  • Konrad Grabiński, Associate Professor, Department of Financial Accounting, Cracow University of Economics, Poland
  • Fernando Dal-Ri Murcia, Associate Professor, Accounting and Actuarial Sciences Department, University of São Paulo, Brazil
  • Supriyadi, Assistant Professor, Department of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia
  • Elmar Retief Venter, Associate Professor, Department of Taxation, University of Pretoria, South Africa

Ongoing mentorship is a critical element of the Deloitte IAAER Scholarship Program and some well-known and highly accomplished accounting experts have volunteered their support. These include former member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, Katherine Schipper (Duke University); former member of the International Accounting Standards Board, Mary Barth (Stanford University); Chika Saka (Kwansei Gakuin University); Sidney Gray (University of Sydney); and Ann Tarca (University of Western Australia).

Deloitte has a long-standing global commitment to education and skills development. The global community investment initiative of the Deloitte network, Deloitte21, focuses on enabling Deloitte people to apply their skills and experience to support local education programs, secondary schools, and tertiary institutions around the world.

"Education is the foundation to developing a supply of talented people that is needed to sustain business, government and community activities. Deloitte member firms have helped more than 350,000 young people in the last year alone to be better prepared for work, and the Deloitte IAAER Scholarship program provides an additional boost to this effort," said Mr. Heeter.

Since Deloitte21 was launched in 2009, Deloitte member firms have directed over US$130 million in pro bono services, volunteer time, and cash or in-kind giving to education and skills programs.
