The future of infrastructure: A survey of infrastructure trends

A new economic reality calls for infrastructure reimagined: more digital, more sustainable, more equitable. From broadband to bike lanes, we asked experts how infrastructure will change

Beyond roads and bridges

Economic disruption and the shift to remote work and telemedicine have big implications for infrastructure. Purely physical infrastructure (roads, bridges, electricity, etc.) is evolving to become more digital, with broadband, self-driving cars, and smart infrastructure taking centre stage. A new focus on the environment and broad social benefits is also reshaping the landscape.

To address these changes, governments around the world are shifting how they invest in infrastructure.

To find out how they’re doing, we surveyed more than 600 public officials and infrastructure executives from 18 countries for our report, The future of global infrastructure.

Some of the findings:

  • Technology is reshaping infrastructure: artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and cybersecurity technologies are expected to have the most impact on infrastructure projects—55% of respondents believe AI/machine learning will have the greatest impact.
  • Cybersecurity a top concern: As government shifts to a more digital infrastructure, cyber risk becomes a concern—76% expect a greater focus on data security over the next three years.
  • Green infrastructure is in demand: 60% of respondents plan to invest in urban spaces for walking, cycling, socializing, and eating.
