2021 CBC Impact Report

As a purpose-led organization, we are demonstrating our commitment to address climate change through WorldClimate, our strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, “operate green,” and extend our impact beyond Deloitte.

We also seek to empower, inspire and spark action in our professionals, through our Climate Champion awards where peers and team leaders can nominate and recognize those individuals who  demonstrate responsible climate choices and contribute to sustainable projects and policies.

With the establishment of our regional WorldClimate Sustainability Working Group – we have pushed our WorldClimate agenda forward, with leaders and volunteers from each Deloitte Caribbean and Bermuda location.

Our journey began a little over 3 years ago, as we collectively sought to report and understand our emissions numbers, devise operating strategies to reduce our GHG emissions and together with the Global Deloitte Network disclose our climate strategy and output to the CDP and other climate ratings agencies.

Our story progresses from being Carbon neutral in 2020 for operations and business travel, to being Carbon Neutral in 2021 for all Scope 1,2 and 3 GHS emissions i.e. total emissions from operations, business travel and purchases of goods and services.

The changes necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic—combined with Deloitte’s ability to continue serving clients effectively despite the hurdles—caused us to reexamine how business operates. We know travel is beneficial. We know many things can be done more efficiently when people are together in the same room. We now understand, though, how Deloitte can operate differently and still maintain the same high levels of service and quality.

Our commitment to smart, purposeful travel is good news for the environment. But, it’s only part of the story.

Deloitte launched WorldClimate—our strategy to drive responsible climate choices within our organization and beyond—in FY2020 to address the world’s urgent climate crisis with achievable, measurable and science-based actions. Deloitte leaders, including the Deloitte Global Executive, committed to align with the 1.5°C decarbonization pathway because anything less ambitious will not have the necessary impact. Deloitte’s WorldClimate carbon reduction goals are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

WorldClimate recognizes it will take collective action to combat climate change. That’s why we have adopted a three-pronged approach—actions we take, actions we inspire our people to take, and actions we take with others in our ecosystem.

Deloitte has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 for its operations. To get there, we are embedding sustainability into policies and practices throughout the organization. And we are empowering our people to make climate-friendly decisions and influence others to do the same.

Deloitte also is actively engaging ecosystems to increase demand for responsible products and services, remove roadblocks that get in the way of enacting change, and create innovative climate solutions. Globally, we help shape the climate agenda through sponsorships and projects with organizations such as the World Economic Forum; and through activities surrounding key events such as the B7, the B20 and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Our intention in the Caribbean and Bermuda region is to be a voice of advocacy for responsible climate choices and work with local ecosystem stakeholders.

In 2021, we instituted our Sustainability Policy, which addresses all GHG emissions categories – Scope 1,2,3 for operations, business travel and the purchases of goods and services. We’ve implemented energy efficiency initiatives across equipment, air-conditioning units, lighting and policies for the use of common office areas and low traffic areas to actively reduce overall electricity consumption to lower our Scope 2 emissions.

We have successfully been able to achieve 33% year on year reduction of building emissions and our business travel emissions numbers, embracing increased virtual interactions with both clients and internal business meetings. We have begun vendor discussions for the use of renewable energies to be onboarded in the near future, as we pursue our goal of Net-Zero by 2030.

Our Greenhouse gas emissions by Scope in 2021:

Most significantly, we have built on our operational success for reduced emissions, by investing in Carbon Offset projects for the emissions produced in both fiscal year 2020 and 2021. 1,846MT for operations and travel emissions were offset for fiscal year 2020 and for fiscal year 2021, our offsets expanded to include operations and travel and emissions from purchases of goods and services, with 3,017MT bring offset.

These offset projects for which investments were made included – Rainforest reforestation, Wind Farm sustainable infrastructure and improved cookstoves (for health and livelihood).
