Life at Deloitte

Meet Sandro

Intern in Financial Services, M&A Restructuring Services

After he finished his Bachelor studies in Business Administration at the ZHAW in August 2014, Sandro started his internship in Financial Advisory and is now working as a consultant in the M&A Restructuring Services team.

During my studies, I quickly developed a strong interest in M&A, because it involves assessing almost every dimension a company operates in, such as the strategic direction, operating processes, financial position and competitive environment. Advising companies in this strategic affair appealed to me professionally and I therefore applied for a 6-month traineeship with Deloitte in the Financial Advisory division.

Deloitte combines the benefits of a large global professional network with an entrepreneurial setup, especially in the Financial Advisory unit with approximately 75 employees in the Swiss practice. Due to its size, the teams are structured in a flat hierarchy which allows you to assume responsibility early on. Additionally Deloitte’s pool concept on junior levels allows you to gain experience in all Financial Advisory sub-service lines such as M&A Lead Advisory, Valuation, Transaction Services (Due Diligence), Restructuring Services and Post Merger integration (PMI).

My first project

The first two months of my traineeship I spent on a PMI project for a major pharma company in Basel. I was part of an international twelve-person project team in a joint effort with Deloitte Consulting. We were planning for the integration of a substantial business division, where our team covered the project management role for EMEA and supply chain planning for all regions other than the US. The friendly atmosphere as well as the extensive interaction within the project team made it very easy to integrate and become a regular team member rather than a trainee. After that I switched to the M&A lead advisory team for a buy side advisory mandate with a renowned bank and attended client meetings right from the beginning. Also, I felt that my ideas and input were appreciated and taken seriously by the engagement team leaders.

Projects in Financial Advisory typically exhibit very challenging features and can be intense and time pressured at times. However, you are rewarded by working alongside highly-skilled professionals on interesting, dynamic and diverse projects thereby experiencing a steep learning curve. For these reasons, I accepted the full-time position I was offered upon the end of my traineeship and I am confident that thereby I will further develop my technical skills, gain M&A experience and work on further interesting projects.
