This year marks a key moment in addressing the biggest global challenges, as world leaders come together during the United Nations General Assembly to adopt the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Deloitte is led by a purpose–to make an impact that matters–and is committed to contributing to a sustainable and prosperous future for all.

Perspectives on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda

Over the last few decades, the world has seen societal issues not only persist but grow—lack of access to education and economic opportunity, adequate health care, a clean and safe environment, and sufficient food and nutrition, among others. Tackling these issues is no longer seen to be the responsibility of a single organization or sector: governments, civil society, and businesses are increasingly collaborating on innovative new approaches to drive positive change.

At Deloitte, we believe business plays a fundamental role in shaping and creating progress in society, and are committed to driving societal change and promoting environmental sustainability. Deloitte has long been a contributor to addressing complex global development challenges: as a founding signatory of the United Nations Global Compact and helping develop the Women's Empowerment Principles with UN Women. With the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, this commitment will not waver. 

Deloitte member firms are involved in various initiatives and programs aligned to one or more of the sustainable development goals. For example, Deloitte Middle East’s “Women March” initiative, which raises awareness of empowerment, investment, and acceleration of women’s advancement across the Middle East. The Social Innovation Pioneers program at Deloitte UK is helping address employability and job creation challenges by supporting socially innovative businesses.

Deloitte at United Nations General Assembly week

To coincide with UN General Assembly week and the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals, Deloitte US hosted a salon dinner in New York to discuss how companies can incorporate social impact into their businesses. The event convened senior executives and esteemed social sector leaders. It was hosted by Diana O’Brien, US Executive Committee member and Chief Marketing Officer, Deloitte LLP, and Jerry O'Dwyer, Leader of Deloitte US Consulting’s new Social Impact practice, in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation. The theme of the discussion was “Driving Corporate Value through Social Impact” with opening remarks from United Nations Foundation President and CEO Kathy Calvin, followed by a discussion of Deloitte US’s recent research findings on the Global Fortune 500 and resulting categorization of companies into four social impact business models or archetypes.

Deloitte UK publishes research in collaboration with the Social Progress Imperative

A report developed by Deloitte UK, in conjunction with the Social Progress Imperative, found that high economic growth alone will not get the world close to meeting the United Nation’s new Sustainable Development Goals. While expected economic growth will likely raise the world’s average annual income from US$14,000 to US$23,000 by 2030, social progress is expected to grow at only a fraction of that rate. Instead, the world will need a “productivity revolution” in creating social value if countries are to meet the SDGs. This will require a shift away from a reliance on economic growth alone. Cultural shifts, scaling social innovation, and cross-sector collaboration will all be necessary to solve society’s biggest challenges.
