Role model, performance manager, objective assessor, active advisor. The part your mentor plays in developing you as a global professional is multi-faceted.

Usually an experienced manager within your service line or function, your mentor helps manage your performance as you progress, and acts as an information source and liaison point. You can turn to him or her for support on any issues that have an impact on your daily work and development.

This is a relationship in which experience really matters. It typically lasts for at least two performance cycles in order to maintain continuity of dialogue and consistency of career planning. But it’s a two-way process: you must be active in pursuing feedback, grasping learning and development opportunities, attaining your goals and being accountable for your performance.

Through your mentor you establish goals, receive feedback and review your performance at the end of each cycle. Your mentor represents you as other managers review your results, assess your performance and discuss promotion possibilities.

Coaching, evaluating and feedback

On-going performance management means regular reviews in which your mentor and others provide expert feedback to help you determine areas that need particular attention for development. Expect a steep learning curve that will keep you challenged, and a professional development matrix based on your particular position, level and function. But the path laid by you and your mentor will lead to more industry-specific learning once you reach management level.
