Square peg in a round hole

For some lucky people, they have always known what they wanted to do in life. I was not one of the lucky ones; my mind has changed a million times and still continues to do so. I thought I had my life all figured out; a straight line from point A to point B. I was going to graduate with a Bachelor of Science and become a pediatric surgeon but here I am writing a blog for Deloitte. How did I get here?

Let’s just say, life isn’t as straight a line as I thought. There were twists and turns filled with new experiences that have all played a part in leading me here. So you say 1 + 5 = 6 but I say so does 3 + 3 and 2 + 4. If working at Deloitte is your number 6, there are many paths to getting there and they all will take you on a journey that can make you happy. You don’t have to be a business major to work at Deloitte; Deloitte welcomes students from all degrees.

I studied Microbiology and Immunology; talk about trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. But crazy thing is that my studies and Deloitte are quite relatable. The skills that I learned during my time at university and the endless hours spent in the lab were transferrable to my job here at Deloitte. I developed and strengthened my analytical skills, communication skills, ability to multi task, ability to prioritize and so much more. These skills are the ones I use everyday on the job so whether I developed these skills by studying business or by studying science, it doesn’t matter. Sure, my accounting knowledge wasn’t exactly on point, but at Deloitte they teach you everything you need to know. So you just need to bring your smarts, a strong work ethic and the drive to succeed.

Do away with thinking that you’re the square peg in the round hole. We need you and your diverse degrees. Remember, circles fit in round holes and circles have 360 degrees – one of those could be yours!
