Deloitte at the World Humanitarian Summit

Supporting the global humanitarian agenda

With humanitarian crises reaching an unprecedented level of scale and complexity, the United Nations is convening the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul on 23-24 May. Deloitte is committed to supporting this global call to action and engaging leaders across government, civil society, and business to help alleviate suffering around the world.

Deloitte and the global humanitarian agenda

Since 2014, over 11,000 people have died in six countries from the worst outbreak of the Ebola virus in history.1 More than one million Syrian refugees fled to Europe in 2015 out of a total 4.8 million displaced since the onset of the Syrian civil war.  These complex humanitarian crises conflate environmental, social, and economic issues in ways that no single actor can address independently. Increasingly, organizations from across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors are collaborating in powerful ways to respond to humanitarian crises.

Deloitte is committed to strengthening the humanitarian response, and believes that business has an important role to play in this ecosystem. Deloitte member firms collaborate with local, national, and international humanitarian organizations to co-create innovative solutions to the sector’s most pressing challenges.

Engaging the business community in crisis response

Deloitte US is working to better understand and promote the role of the private sector in complex humanitarian crises, across economic, social, or environmental dimensions. A collaboration between Deloitte, the World Economic Forum, and the Logistics Emergency Team led to a research effort exploring how leading companies are contributing to crisis response. Interviews with dozens of companies and humanitarian organizations have provided insights into the changing role of the private sector in humanitarian action, and the power of partnerships in achieving impact. You can read some highlights here. Through this study, Deloitte intends to provide helpful tools for companies either looking to become involved in complex crises for the first time, or become more thoughtful about their current involvement.

Deloitte's commitment to supporting the refugee crisis response

Many Deloitte member firms are taking action to support refugees and their families. For example, Deloitte Middle East’s Syrian refugee program focuses on educating and empowering women and children who have been impacted most by the ongoing conflict in the region.

Deloitte is a partner in the Tent Alliance. Launched in Davos at the 2016 annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, the Tent Alliance is a platform to leverage the dynamism and ingenuity of corporations to support one another, and the public sector, to ultimately put an end to the refugee crisis.
