Business with a Heart

Are you ready for the future?

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) encompass 17 bold goals to strengthen People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership by 2030.

Business with a Heart

SOS Malta and Deloitte Malta, together with the support of the CORE Platform (Corporate Citizenship for Responsible Enterprises), teamed up to take on global challenges presented by the SDGs through an initiative called "Business with a Heart".

The aim was to increase knowledge and awareness of the local business sector with regards to its role in contributing to the SDGs, and to seek to address some of the barriers of businesses involvement in the SDGs, including the lack of knowledge; lack of leadership and the lack of recognition of potential gains. This was addressed through a targeted social media and visual campaign aimed at encouraging and stimulating local businesses to engage in tackling the SDGs at a local level, in particular through their CSR.

The project initially kicked off with a targeted survey through a questionnaire that was distributed to local businesses and aimed at identifying the level of knowledge and commitment to the SDGs. Knowledge gained from this was used to launch the campaign along with suggested recommendations for businesses on ways to improve their responsible practices and ensure resilience for future challenges.

The campaign culminated in a workshop, attended by a representatives form a broad spectrum of the business community, which delved into the concept of sustainability and how it can be implemented into business models. Space was provided for discussion and development of ideas for good practices participants we encouraged to take SDGs on board in planning for change and future within their businesses.

This project was partly funded by the re-granting fund of the Educating for Change (E4C) EU-funded project, being implemented in Malta by SKOP.

The Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 goals, set out by the United Nations in 2015, with the aim of inter alia ending poverty, protecting the planet, ensuring prosperity for all, and are all part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.

As the driving force behind economic growth, business is uniquely positioned to help establish a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable society. However, a transformative change requires all companies to integrate environmental, social and good governance approaches. As the United Nations Global Compact highlights, ‘simply doing business to earn the greatest profits is no longer enough. Corporations must be responsible for the repercussions of their actions in ways that go beyond profit and loss’. The launch of the SDGs has provided a framework for action in this regard.
