Perspectives

Our Commitment to the Sector

At Deloitte we are increasingly focused on delivering real, sustainable solutions to the needs of our Charities and Not for Profit clients, moving away from a traditional philanthropy model to one of genuine partnership in which we use the talents and resources of the firm to maximize our impact. We show our commitment in the following areas

Staff and partner fundraising and trustee positions

We have a long and proud history of support for a wide range of causes. Each year, literally thousands of our people take part in a huge variety of fundraising activities, such as raffles, auctions, quiz nights, organised walks, runs and bike rides, as well as more challenging marathons and triathlons. Our people also provide support to charity by giving their time and expertise through a range of volunteering and pro-bono activities as well as holding significant trustee positions.

Every office has a champion who organises local events, and there's an online fundraising calendar of national fundraising activities. Additionally, each year the firm allocates a matched funded amount for staff fundraising events.

  • During the last year the firm and its people, through Deloitte programmes, made a total contribution of nearly £10 million, including more than 44,000 hours of volunteering and nearly £6 million of services.
  • We launched the inaugural Deloitte Ride Across Britain, sponsored the Deloitte Street Child World Cup and again funded the Deloitte Ignite festival at the Royal Opera House
We received a Race for Opportunity Collaboration Award for our employability skills initiative and a Hollis Sponsorship Award for our work on disability sport.
  • We appointed the firm’s first ever Deloitte21 Fellow, a Director who will provide support to the Microloan Foundation. The Foundation provides training and makes small loans to young women in rural Malawi, helping them start and grow their own businesses. This is part of Deloitte21, DTTL’s global community focus which provides innovative solutions to address educational needs for underserved young people.
  • We commenced funding to the Clore Social Leadership Programme (CSLP) of a Specialist Fellowship who we will engage closely with and work with CSLP to find effective ways of engaging the Clore Social Fellows as a whole with Deloitte’s work.
  • In October and November of 2010, 95 of our people climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in aid of our charity partners Cancer Research UK, Children with Leukemia, Help for Heroes and the African Rainforest Trust. The total amount raised was £470,512.

CSR Programme

Deloitte has always had at the core of its business a social responsibility to its people and to the communities in which it operates. As our company has grown so too have our opportunities to make an impact. Today, our ambition is to be a leader in society: to play a positive and active role tackling the needs and opportunities in the wider community within which we work. We each have an opportunity and a responsibility to make a difference and that Deloitte can help encourage and focus that impact.

Our Corporate Responsibility framework focuses on four key areas and we demonstrate this through talent, community, environmental and marketplace. As a socially responsible business, we recognise our obligation to contribute to the wider community. Through our Community Investment Programme, which has won several awards, we provide professional and financial support to a wide variety of charities and community organisations, placing a special emphasis on supporting the young and disadvantaged. We encourage all our people to become involved in charity and community projects with the full support of the firm. Activities that our people engage in include:

  • Secondary school mentoring
  • Prince’s Trust business mentoring
  • Volunteering in the firm’s time
  • Regional office fundraising
  • Our annual ‘Computers for Charity' competition
  • A highly successful Give As You Earn scheme

Deloitte is a member of the One Per Cent Club. The Deloitte Charitable Trust operated independently of the firm’s management to allocate designated funds to charitable organisations.

Recently, Deloitte announced its involvement in two additional major projects: employability skills and disability sport. Deloitte is making a £2.5 million investment over the next five years to develop a new generation of employability skills trainers in FE Colleges across the country. Deloitte has launched a £3.4m programme to develop disability sport in the UK, between now and 2012. Our initiative is 50% funded by Government, and reflects our twin traditions of supporting community endeavour and nurturing top talent.

London 2012

Additionally Deloitte have focused significant resources on London 2012 in our role as sponsor and official professional services provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Deloitte firmly believes in the impact London 2012 will have on the UK, accelerating the creation of a new dynamic business centre for London, enhancing the prospects of the people in the east of the City and enthusing a new generation about sport. That is why we have dedicated our skills and put our reputation behind delivering the Games. This year we passed the landmark of 150,000 hours dedicated to the Games by Deloitte people. For Deloitte this is about so much more than just writing a cheque and having a logo on our business cards.

Pro bono Consulting

Deloitte offers support through the technical skills and talents of our people, through our pro bono programme. Our programme works with selected charities and causes with which Deloitte is already associated, serving to deepen the commitment and understanding between us, and making a valuable contribution to the not for profit sector.

"Pro bono consulting offers us an opportunity to add real value to our community using our core consulting skills" - Marcus Boyle, Consulting Corporate Responsibility Partner.

Clore Fellowship

Deloitte is offering support to the Clore Social Leadership Programme and to the aspiring leaders of the social sector. In 2013, as in 2012 and 2011, Deloitte is funding a Fellowship for an aspiring social leader with at least five year’s recent, but not necessarily current, experience of financial responsibilities as a substantial part of the applicant’s role while working with or for a social sector organisation.

As a leading business advisory firm committed to developing its people, Deloitte will provide the Fellows of the Programme access to the best in class facilities and training they will need in developing their leadership skills and talent.
