FanTAXtic

Taking the tax case study competition to a higher level

The Deloitte FanTAXtic case competition features a reality-based case, student team presentations completed virtually, opportunities for networking with tax professionals and a chance to compete in a national event. It’s not the usual student tax competition. It’s fun. It’s real world. It’s FanTAXtic!

Competition overview

This year’s virtual Regional Competitions will begin with the case on September 29, 2023 and will conclude with presentations on October 27, 2023. Following the regional events, the first-place regional teams will advance to the National Competition at Deloitte University (DU) in Westlake, Texas on January 19-21, 2024 if federal, state, and local COVID restrictions/guidelines and Deloitte policies allow.

The Deloitte FanTAXtic Competition provides an opportunity for students from accounting programs across the country to gain real-world experience through participation in an interscholastic competition. Schools will be able to submit 1 team to participate and provide a preference for a 2nd team. We will notify all invited schools by September 27 if we can accommodate their 2nd team. Each team must be comprised of a minimum of three or a maximum of five full-time students per team*.

Browse this site for more information and to register your team(s). The Regional agenda will be announced after all teams have registered.

*Note: Each team must consist of two to three freshman/sophomores and not more than two juniors. (One junior can be substituted with a senior, but there can be no more than one senior per team.)

We look forward to your institution’s participation.

Schedule of events

Early October

All Registered Teams will receive, via email, the electronic version of the case materials when the Local Case Competition begins on Friday, September 29, 2023. All Registered Teams will be required to submit their final PowerPoint presentation/proposed solution, in advance of the Regional Competition, and their presentation will be part of the case simulation presented to a Regional Judging Panel (who will role play the client). All final presentation slides must be emailed and are due no later than Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. ET. No updated/modified presentations will be permitted after the submission deadline.

Each Registered Team will be assigned a Deloitte Advisor. The role of the Deloitte Advisor is to act as “Client Liaison”, and answer basic questions as the participants prepare for the Regional Presentations. Deloitte Advisors will not offer specific guidance related to the solution.

Thursday, October 26, 2023

Deloitte invites you and your team to attend a virtual kick-off event with your Regional Competition group. This kick-off event provides faculty advisors, student participants and Deloitte representatives an opportunity to meet and network informally prior to Friday’s competition. Attendance at the event is encouraged, but optional.

Friday, October 27, 2023

Team presentation times will be assigned prior to the competition day and will take place throughout the morning and afternoon. Each Registered Team will present their solution virtually (via Zoom) to a Regional Judging Panel for up to 10 minutes. After each presentation, participants will engage in Q & A from a judging panel for 5-7 minutes. After all participants have completed their presentations, a Deloitte professional will provide concluding remarks.

The Tax Partner Champion debrief will be delivered during a live webcast on Friday, October 27, 2023 and will announce the regional winners advancing to the National Competition. An email announcing the regional winners will also be sent after the webcast.

Deloitte Tax professionals participate in the event and offer the students support and guidance throughout the competition.

Regional FanTAXtic events occur annually across the US. Up to sixteen regional teams are then selected to advance to the Nationa Deloitte FanTAXtic competition which is held annually in January.
