My Deloitte Story

Maria Paschalis, Partner, Audit Leader

In 1998, Maria Paschalis launched her career at Chrysanthou & Christoforou, which merged with Deloitte Cyprus later on. Climbing to the top, Maria became a Partner in 2004 and since January 2018 she is the Audit Leader of Deloitte Cyprus.

When did you start your career at Deloitte?

I’ve been with the Deloitte family since I returned to Cyprus in 1998 after completing my studies and gaining some initial work experience in London. I have always been in the Audit Department serving a wide range of listed and private clients both in Cyprus and abroad. In 2004, I was promoted to a Partner in the Audit Function, the Firm’s leading department in terms of manpower and revenues. During my career I also assumed the roles of Audit Learning Leader and National Practice Protection Director. Since January 2018, I am the Audit Leader of the Cyprus member firm.

What is it that has kept you with the organisation and growing in your career?

Undoubtedly, Deloitte constantly offers opportunities for growth, learning and development, especially for those who have the ambition to have a long-term career in Professional Services. Deloitte is the Employer of choice! It is a place where individuals grow and mature both personally and professionally. Of course, this culture derives through the diversity of its people, the innovation and the people-oriented approach. Deloitte offers people, knowledge, meaningful experiences, technical skills and the opportunity to forge strong business relationships, all of which are necessary to succeed.

What do you mostly enjoy about working at Deloitte?

I really enjoy working with people from many backgrounds, whose strengths, skills and passion complement my own, to deliver results. People at all levels respect others’ opinions and that in turn leads into an appreciation for diversity, inclusion and recognition. The outstanding value we offer to the marketplace derives from our people. Even though Deloitte is a big organization, its culture is collaborative and it encourages talented individuals from different backgrounds to come together and produce their best work.

What I also value about Deloitte as an organization is the opportunity to have work-life balance. Being a mother of 3 I am greatly thankful of how I can manage my work load and also spend time with my family. This would never be possible in an organization that does not support working mothers in a number of ways.

What would you say has been the ultimate highlight of your career so far?

I would say my involvement in the learning and development of our people. People are the most important asset of a Firm and it feels great to be able to contribute to their development. We rely on our Performance Management Approach and regular feedback through focus groups and Employee Opinion Surveys, to identify people’s learning and development needs. The aim is to ensure that our people are able to build and sustain the required capabilities for achieving Deloitte’s vision and the corporate objectives. Also believing in the strength of personal contact with our people, I am responsible for organizing one-to-one meetings to discuss any possible concerns and to tackle those in timely and effective manner.
