Introducing the IoT Newsflash

No. 01/2018 - Konstantin Dörr

We as the IoT practice of Deloitte Germany are delighted to introduce the IoT Newsflash. At irregular intervals, we report on current market developments and IoT trends affecting multiple industries.

As the development of the IoT is happening at a breathtaking pace, and IoT is the source of many promising business opportunities, the IoT Newsflash series accompanies this evolution by providing, summarizing and discussing selected insights on IoT up-to-date and across different industries. We show that IoT is more than just a network that connects physical objects and is instead affecting our personal lives more than we can imagine.

The IoT Newsflash series is starting with an overview and outlook of the latest research on IoT market trends 2018:

  • Gartner, Inc. lists the Top 10 IoT Technologies for Digital Business in 2018 and 2019 starting with IoT Platforms, Predictive Analytics, IoT Security Technologies, Machine Intelligence and VPAs, Short-Range Wireless Networks, Event Stream Processing, IoT MPU or MCU, IoT Operating Systems IoT Device Management as well as Edge Computing.
  • Forrester Research predicts in his report Predictions 2018: IoT Moves From Experimentation To Business Scale, that the IoT will become essential for the customer value, the IoT infrastructure will shift to the edge and to specialized IoT platforms, developers will have a significant impact on platforms and initiatives while security issues will still be a key concern.
  • Gartner, Inc. predicts there will be nearly 20 billion devices connected to the IoT by 2020, and the IoT product and service suppliers will generate more than $300 billion in revenue. In 2018, the Internet of Things will break through, with organizations ramping up deployments and incorporating IoT technologies into their products, processes and workflows.
  • Our ninth annual Deloitte Technology Trends Report 2018 analyzes trends that could disrupt businesses in the next 18-24 months. It also covers the IoT and its disruptive potential. As companies are adopting IoT-based models, they are expanding their ecosystems to millions of connected devices. The report is also addressing cultural and legal topics as well as issues of cyber security arguing that the protection of IoT devices and applications is becoming paramount. This development calls for an effective and built-in control from the start.

Stay tuned for the next IoT Newsflash.
